Despite its debut just last year, the production for the new “Dragon Ball Daima” anime series began much earlier than fans might assume. The show was created as a special tribute to celebrate the 40th anniversary of “Dragon Ball”. In an interview with Mantan Web in Japan, the producer of Dragon Ball, Akio Iyoku, revealed that the planning for the new anime actually started during the production of “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero”.
According to Iyoku’s interview (noted by @Venixys on X), the idea for Dragon Ball Daima was born when the team was seeking a fresh series, apart from the movies. Interestingly, Iyoku mentioned that initially, they anticipated minimal input from the late series creator Akira Toriyama regarding the new series’ plot. However, his enthusiasm about the anime concepts escalated, leading him to take charge of the entire storyline himself.
Dragon Ball Daima Started Production Years Ago
The journey started around six years back while we were developing Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. Our idea was to produce a standalone series distinct from the films, so we sought Toriyama’s opinion. Initially, we wanted him to contribute lightly, but his enthusiasm took over, and he ended up overseeing most aspects of the project.”
As Iyoku went on, he felt that Toriyama was thrilled because creating a new series from scratch offered more time and creative freedom to shape its narrative. In fact, work on the series began before the storyline was fully conceived.
For the first time, we embarked on crafting an original TV series, which seemed thrilling for Toriyama. Unlike filmmaking with its time limitations, this project granted us ample room to mold and refine the storyline. We were even able to exchange ideas numerous times before the story reached completion, and in a way, the production process resembled that of a weekly manga serialization, sustaining an element of excitement throughout. As the anime progressed, it began to mirror Dragon Ball GT, influencing its final shape and narrative.
What’s Next for Dragon Ball?
The focus was mainly on appealing to individuals around their early 30s who initially watched “Dragon Ball GT” and now have kids, as our aim was to develop a fresh series with the same essence as GT. However, “Dragon Ball Daima” was conceived as a standalone project designed to attract audiences unfamiliar with Dragon Ball, while also offering something novel for seasoned fans to engage with, expanding on the existing universe’s lore.
Iyoku explained that we’re not introducing new concepts into the story, rather we’re revealing aspects that were already part of the Dragon Ball universe. We aim to stay true to the franchise’s essence, but also add something fresh to keep it engaging. Finding this balance is tricky.” As Dragon Ball Daima concludes, fans are eagerly anticipating what’s next for the series. Iyoku hinted that the franchise will carry on, but specific details about its future direction remain undisclosed at this time.
