Returnal is comfortably one of the best PS5 games, but it wasn’t everyone’s cup of coffee.
Some players found the roguelike aspect overly punishing because, despite minor advancements in each playthrough, they frequently had to begin anew with each new attempt. Although many players enjoyed this challenging feature of the game, others felt discouraged by the lack of substantial progression and eventually stopped playing.
In contrast to other titles by Housemarque, the upcoming game Saros (releasing in 2026) stands out with its persistent resources and advancement system. As stated by creative director Gregory Louden on the PS Blog, each death in this game will hold significance due to its progressive nature where resources and progress remain constant.
He mentioned that following each death, the world will transform, yet in Saros, you’ll have the ability to select and permanently enhance your equipment from a constantly developing collection of weapons and suit improvements to “return with more might” and conquer the obstacles on Carcosa.
Indeed, this game appears to maintain Housemarque’s signature style of challenging arcade gameplay. However, it also seems designed to provide a satisfying sense of progression for players who enjoy that aspect. If the current development trends continue, we may be looking at another highly-acclaimed title from one of Sony’s top studios.
Louden expressed: “We’re eager to reveal more details about our gameplay, visuals, sound, music, technology, narrative, the ways we leverage the capabilities of the PS5 console, and much more from all the people involved in Saros. This is an ambitious project led by a group of passionate individuals.
We’re excited!
