With word spreading about Disney’s forthcoming revival of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” two of the series’ most memorable actors – Sarah Michelle Gellar and James Marsters – are expressing their thoughts on the subject.
As the series progresses without Joss Whedon, its creator whose unique style shaped the Buffyverse, many fans are uncertain if this remake will recreate the enchantment of the original or if it may succumb to the same flaws that have affected Disney’s more recent franchise endeavors.
Gellar Breaks Down How the Reboot Began
Sarah Michelle Gellar, who famously played Buffy Summers for seven seasons and is set to reprise her role in an upcoming reboot, recently shared some insights about the project on Instagram. She posted a picture from Season 1’s “Never Kill a Boy on the First Date” episode along with the memorable quote: “If the apocalypse comes, beep me.” In the caption, she explained the genesis of the revival and her reasons for agreeing to return to the role.

Approximately three years ago, my cherished friend and guide, Gail Berman, phoned me. She expressed her desire for me to have a conversation with Chloé Zhao regarding the possibility of reviving Buffy. I was astounded that Chloé recognized me, yet as usual, I communicated my doubts about the show’s potential return to Gail. However, there was something distinct in her tone that time. Eventually, I consented (primarily out of curiosity to meet Chloé), and our brief coffee chat morphed into a lengthy, four-hour conversation. We shared laughter, tears, but mostly we reminisced about the profound impact this show has had on us.
At first, Gellar maintained that the series had achieved a flawless ending, but later on, Zhao, renowned for “Nomadland” and the less-than-successful “Marvel’s Eternals”, managed to change her mind.
At that meeting, I didn’t make any commitments, but surprisingly, I agreed to keep talking about it. As it turned out, those discussions persisted over the following years, and eventually, we brought Nora and Lilla Zuckerman into our small group. Eventually, after much discussion, we finally came up with an idea.
In the span of three years, collaborative work between Zhao and the Zuckerman sisters (from “Poker Face”) culminated in a strategy that ultimately persuaded Gellar not just to reprise her role as Buffy, but also to assume the position of executive producer.
Marsters Stays Tight-Lipped but Hopeful
During a live streaming autograph session on his Instagram, James Marsters, well-known for his portrayal of fan-favorite character Spike, hinted at his thoughts about the upcoming reboot in a guardedly positive manner without revealing too many details.

Regarding the upcoming ‘Buffy’ reboot, James Marsters confessed he can’t discuss it. He apologizes for any disappointment but feels it’s best not to share anything at this moment, to ensure the project thrives. Excited as everyone else to learn more about Buffy Summers’ adventures, he plans to be supportive by staying quiet for now.
Marsters’ cautious reaction implies that although he’s optimistic about the reboot’s prospects, he understands that it’s a sensitive and contentious issue among the fans due to its delicacy.
The Whedon-Shaped Void: Can the Reboot Survive Without the Creator of the Buffyverse?
Although Gellar’s comeback sparks enthusiasm in many and Marsters‘ cautious endorsement piques curiosity, it can’t be ignored that the notable absence of Buffy creator Joss Whedon is conspicuous. Whedon, who has faced accusations of misconduct recently, was the sole creative force behind Buffy’s distinctive mix of clever humor, complex characters, and groundbreaking narrative style.
Joss Whedon not only developed the main character Buffy Summers, but also shaped the memorable supporting cast, from Willow’s emotional arc to Spike’s transformation from villain to anti-hero. His writing skillfully blended humor, heartache, and horror in a manner that few shows have since replicated. Many question whether a remake can maintain the enchantment that made Buffy a cultural sensation without him at the helm.
Concerns Over Disney’s Track Record and Zhao’s Direction
The main uncertainty is if Disney, via 20th Television, will be able to create a Buffy series that stays true to its original content instead of turning it into yet another superficial “girl boss” production – a trend regrettably seen in Disney’s more recent productions.
Chloé Zhao’s participation, which convinced Gellar, has not alleviated the apprehensions among fans who recall her previous franchise experience: Marvel’s “Eternals”. This movie was Marvel’s first significant box office flop, receiving widespread criticism for its flat, one-dimensional characters and an overabundance of Disney’s signature style of seemingly effortless, unapproachable “strong female” leads. Despite Chloé Zhao’s impressive artistic background from “Nomadland”, “Eternals” serves as a warning about how even a talented filmmaker can struggle under the Disney machine.
Can Lightning Strike Twice Without the Spark?
Gellar’s determination and readiness to come back despite years of hesitation are inspiring, while Marsters’ optimistic silence hints at something promising in the making. Yet, given that Disney is now in charge and Whedon’s unique creative influence is missing, the remake could face significant challenges ahead.
Could Disney and Zhao deviate from the studio’s current trend of producing content that appears shallow and driven by agendas (such as “The Acolyte,” “The Marvels,” and “Echo”), and instead create something reminiscent of what made “Buffy” exceptional—solid storytelling, complex protagonists, and tangible consequences? Alternatively, will it turn out to be another uninspired cash grab that lacks the essence that made the original a classic?
