The ocean can be a terrifying place.
On February 8th, Adrián Simancas’s idea turned into an actual event as he was kayaking near the Chilean coast. Suddenly, a humpback whale burst out of the water and apparently engulfed him entirely.
In video recorded by his father, Dell, Adrián was enclosed in a whale’s mouth briefly, then brought underwater for several seconds. Remarkably, he came out unhurt.
Originally, I believed I’d perished, shared Adrián with the Associated Press during an interview on February 13th. I assumed it had devoured me entirely and digested me. Needless to say, fear gripped me as I thought I was helpless in this situation.
As a devoted son from Chile, I found myself treading water, my heart pounding with my father’s calming words echoing in my ears. It wasn’t merely my safety that sent shivers of apprehension through me, but the well-being of the one who had always been my guiding star as well.
Speaking further, I expressed my fear as I began to rise and drift. I worried that my father might meet a similar fate, that we may not make it to the safety of the shore before something tragic occurred, or that I could develop hypothermia in these frigid waters.
Following my chilling encounter in the Strait of Magellan, I found myself pondering over the thoughts that coursed through my mind during the ordeal.
Post the alarming incident at the Strait of Magellan, I took a moment to reflect on the stream of thoughts that ran through my consciousness during the attack.
He stated, ‘It seemed to me possibly a killer whale. You see, we’d been discussing orcas not long ago, so the idea was fresh in my mind. However, upon further reflection, I realized it likely came close out of curiosity or perhaps to try and communicate with me.’
Although Adrián’s tale is undeniably dramatic, it isn’t unique – there have been numerous similar encounters with orcas around the Iberian Peninsula in recent years. In fact, since 2019, approximately 700 such incidents were reported, leading to the sinking of six boats as per data from scientists at the Atlantic Orca Working Group-GTOA who keep tabs on this species, according to NBC News.
In an interview with the news outlet in September, fisherman Manuel Merianda said, “Absolutely, they could capsize you. After all, we’re the ones who inhabit their territory. We’re the ones who aren’t required to be there.
