Yellowjackets Season 3: Unpredictable & Brutal Return to Form

It’s reasonable to conclude that the gripping suspense of Showtime’s series Yellowjackets started to deviate from its original path during the latter part of season 2.

During the 1990s, when the youthful survivors resorted to cannibalism quickly and as it became clear who was still alive in the current era, there were only a few mysteries left unsolved – primarily, who would claim the title of Antler Queen. Consequently, the plotlines began to lose momentum.

Currently, the narrative seems to be moving at a snail’s pace, as the investigation into Adam’s murder, Lottie’s decline, Nat’s constant presence at Lottie’s wellness center, and Taissa’s sleepwalking storyline all appear prolonged and without direction.

By the finale of season 2, many viewers found themselves utterly disheartened due to the tidy resolutions of each narrative, which seemed overly convenient and somewhat annoying.

Fans were left feeling dejected by the end of season 2 because all storylines had a neat and somewhat irritatingly convenient resolution.

In the 90s, a fire destroyed the cabin, whereas currently, Walter killed Detective Kevyn and misled Detective Saracusa about Adam’s murder, all while Lottie’s hunt ritual led to Misty unintentionally killing Nat during Simone Kessell’s sacrifice ceremony in the wilderness.

The second part of the season ended poorly, but luckily, it provided a total reset. Fortunately, Yellowjackets season 3 leverages this fresh beginning to steer the show towards a new and captivating path.

In a few weeks, the fresh season unfolds right where season 2 concluded, and as they’re in the midst of spring, our resilient youth find themselves in a world that has significantly changed since we last observed them.

Under Natalie’s fresh leadership, the team has built an enchanting camp adorned with teepees. This change of scenery seems to have brought a more optimistic outlook among the group, as they plan a wellness festival filled with games, storytelling, and shared experiences about the hardships and wonders they’ve encountered in the wilderness.

In another interpretation: However, beneath the peaceful facade, cracks begin to show as Shauna starts challenging the new authority and questioning the group’s core values. Her private thoughts, recorded in her diary, read more like a wild tale of chaos: “One day these teenage girls found themselves stranded in the wilderness, and they lost their minds.

The disdainful attitude of Coach Ben (Steven Krueger), who fled at the close of season 2 due to his fear of being devoured, continues to cast a shadow over the camp, as we observe him strolling through the forest.

The recent changes have sparked numerous uncertainties. Will Shauna succumb under pressure? Could Coach Ben possibly act against the Yellowjackets before they could pose a threat to him?

In the current storyline, new mysteries arise as well. Adult Shauna (played by Melanie Lynskey) endeavors to offer comfort and support for Jeff and Callie following their harrowing experiences at the end of season 2. However, her efforts are disrupted when she encounters a sequence of peculiar occurrences. Who or what is causing these haunting events to befall Shauna? And could Callie potentially become entangled in the ensuing turmoil?

As Adult Misty grapples with grief over Nat’s death and her subsequent isolation from the group, along with a growing alcohol issue, Walter questions if she will retaliate against them and seek vengeance.

In a fresh, intriguing plot development (without revealing too many details), both Taissa’s (Tawny Cypress) and Van’s (Lauren Ambrose) mature selves will have their psychological depth delved into more deeply.

In the four episodes I watched for critique, the narratives in both timeframes are once more surprising and captivating, filled with numerous jumpscares and unforeseen plot twists that keep viewers guessing and rekindling the enchantment of the first season.

In addition to its quicker tempo, one aspect that resonated with Yellowjackets’ audience in season 1 was the integration of mysterious elements, which added an element of uncertainty – it was often unclear whether events were influenced by supernatural forces or simply a consequence of the distress the group endured while stranded in the wilderness.

Occasionally during season 2, it seemed like the inclusion of supernatural elements was more for show than delving deeper into character psychology. For instance, Tai’s sleepwalking and Lottie’s current state, specifically, appeared to be repetitive and lacking development.

As a devoted fan, I must say that season 3 seems to strike a perfect equilibrium between the mystical elements and grounded character development. The writers have put extra thought into tying the current struggles of our characters to their past narratives, making for a richer and more immersive viewing experience.

Yet again, the Season 3 actors deliver outstanding performances, with dark humor being a notable aspect. Notably, Lynskey as the disengaged housewife Shauna and Ricci portraying the complex character of the vulnerable yet twisted Misty stand out.

This season offers Lynskey a richer storyline with more depth, and her character becomes even more significant due to the crucial part played by her daughter Callie, as well as Cypress.

It’s likely that we’ll uncover a deeper side to the laid-back Adult Van character, as well. Her past experiences and actions prior to reconnecting with Taissa remain largely unknown. Additionally, it would be intriguing to understand how the impact of her traumatic wilderness experience continues to affect her in later episodes.

Absolutely, since there are five more episodes left, there’s still ample room for this new season to unfold, and unfortunately, it could potentially stumble into the same narrative pitfalls that occurred during season 2.

Given that the creators hinted at season 3 connecting the two storylines, and taking into account its compelling start, it’s definitely worth being optimistic about how it will unfold.
