It’s possible that another real-life version of Dungeons & Dragons could become reality, as Netflix is currently working on a new project based on a well-known campaign environment.
In 2023, the tabletop role-playing game made its way onto the big screen as “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves”, aiming to kickstart a fresh movie series. However, it fell short of expectations when it came to worldwide box office earnings.
Originally, Paramount Pictures, which produced the hit movie featuring Chris Pine, had been working on a TV show intended for their streaming service. However, they decided to abandon the project back in May of the previous year.
Previously owned by Hasbro Entertainment, the Dungeons & Dragons project has now moved to Netflix for development. The original showrunner, Drew Crevello, along with Stranger Things‘ Shawn Levy, are currently working on it at Netflix.
Crevello is particularly recognized for developing the Apple TV+ series “WeCrashed,” a business drama that takes inspiration from the ups and downs experienced by WeWork, a shared office space company.
The upcoming series takes its cues from the epic fantasy world of The Forgotten Realms, teeming with powerful beasts and divine entities, that shares an ancient bond with our planet.
Established by Ed Greenwood in 1987 as part of the Dungeons & Dragons universe, the detailed realm known as The Forgotten Realms has since grown through numerous books and gaming sessions dedicated to its exploration.
Additionally, it serves as a backdrop for the beloved Baldur’s Gate video game franchise, achieving unprecedented fame with its third installment. This version garnered widespread praise from critics and numerous awards, such as those at The Game Awards and Video Game BAFTAs.
It’s clear why this show has been successful despite its challenges, given its long-lasting appeal similar to the alternate world in Stranger Things’ Upside-Down and the captivating parallel reality it presents.
Though Netflix is still working on the project, it hasn’t officially commissioned a complete season of the drama yet. Therefore, fans should keep their anticipation in check as we move through this crucial period.
In a departure from expectations, the ensemble of Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves, comprising Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and Regé-Jean Page, likely won’t reprise their roles for this upcoming series. However, both productions are set within a common, expansive universe (as reported by Deadline).
