The movie titled “Captain America: Brave New World” has made it to theaters at last, but its creation was far from easy-going. Persistent reshoots, political turmoil, and backstage chaos have marked its journey, making this addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) arrive under a somber veil of fan doubt and professional exhaustion.

The movie, featuring Anthony Mackie as Captain America, is under significant financial and societal expectation, given its status as the second standalone MCU film centered around a Black superhero after “Black Panther,” and the first solo appearance for Sam Wilson (played by Mackie) since “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” With an escalating production budget of approximately $180 million (including costly reshoots), poor test screenings, and growing controversies, “Brave New World” could potentially become one of Marvel’s largest financial disappointments.
Behind-the-Scenes Drama and Costly Reshoots
As a passionate fan, I’ve learned from Vulture that the production of “Captain America: Brave New World” was quite the rollercoaster ride for me and other fans alike. A crew member who worked on the film’s reshoots shared that the process was far from smooth sailing, with the movie requiring an extensive 22 days of reshoots following test screenings that left Disney in a bit of a pickle. Insiders described it as a “rough production.” To add fuel to the fire, Disney decided to throw a curveball at the eleventh hour by introducing a new supervillain, played by the talented Giancarlo Esposito. This unexpected move forced the team to rework significant action sequences, which came with a hefty price tag.

The crew member expressed that it seemed clear to them this movie wouldn’t be successful due to some questionable action scenes. They also mentioned experiencing numerous frustrations during production. Describing the chaos on set, they used the word “confusion” to convey the uncertainty about various aspects of the project. After filming ended, there was a sense of disappointment when they realized that the leader of the Serpent Society would be introduced, only for this decision to fluctuate repeatedly, which is costly.
Harrison Ford’s Behavior and Production Woes
Behind-the-scenes tension seems to have originated mainly from Harrison Ford, the actor playing Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. At 82 years old, he’s known for being challenging to work with, reinforcing his status as a notorious Hollywood grump.

A source connected to the production shared that Harrison Ford was one of the grumpiest actors they’ve encountered. It was disappointing since I admire him as a fan, but he certainly acted like a diva on set… His left arm could only move up to his chest level due to a past plane crash, and we had to dress him in motion-capture dots for our film. It seemed like he disliked it greatly and didn’t want to participate.
It seems that this challenging relationship was said to create an unpleasant work atmosphere, where the team treaded carefully to meet Ford’s expectations.
Political Minefield and a Title Change
The controversy stirred up by politics regarding the film has only escalated Disney’s struggles. Originally known as Captain America: New World Order, the movie sparked criticism from political analysts who perceived the title as tied to specific hate-based political groups. To steer clear of more conflict, the studio eventually rebranded it as Brave New World.
However, further complications arose. In one of the film’s promotional previews, a scene showing an assassination attempt on President Ross was taken out. This action followed the actual assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, highlighting Disney’s apprehension about stirring political unrest during an already tumultuous election period.

A crew member noted that Ross was meant to allude to the sitting US President.
According to the source, the character General Ross in the story is seen as a reference to former President Trump. Essentially, they’re portraying him as a strong military leader who transforms into a ruthless, authoritarian figure, similar to the Red Hulk. It seems that Disney was becoming aware of their audience’s sensitivities and trying to avoid further alienating their core base, which has been feeling upset over the past few years.
Mackie’s Controversial Press Tour and Botched Damage Control
During his controversial press tour, Anthony Mackie ignited further debate by proposing that Captain America should not symbolize the United States.
At a press conference held in Rome, Mackie expressed that Captain America embodies various concepts. He doesn’t believe that “America” should be among those ideas that Captain America symbolizes.

The reaction was immediate, as Mackie faced criticism from numerous people who believed he was unpatriotic and misinterpreting the character’s historical significance. To clarify his remarks, Mackie promptly released a public statement on social media.
He made it plain that he feels deeply patriotic, and being given the chance to embody a character like Captain America is an unparalleled privilege for him. His admiration for those who protect and have protected our nation runs deep.
Instead, his supposed apology seemed to further muddy the waters since he failed to clearly affirm that Captain America embodies American values; instead, he merely expressed personal pride in being American.
A Sinking Ship for Marvel?
At a particularly unfavorable moment for Marvel Studios, various contentious issues are arising. Under Bob Iger’s guidance to lessen production volume and prioritize quality, Marvel Studios is optimistic that “Brave New World” can halt the series of box office flops experienced by “The Marvels” and “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania”. However, with superhero saturation at an unprecedented level and audience confidence in Marvel at a record low, “Brave New World” might already be destined for failure before it even debuts.

One crew member summed up the production experience bleakly:
In retrospect, the Marvel filming experience was particularly nerve-wracking compared to my past projects. There was an undercurrent of tension that made everyone feel slightly anxious. It was as if we all had a knot in our stomachs, saying ‘Ugh’ would be an apt description.
Amidst Mackie’s communication fiasco, Ford’s problematic set conduct, heated political disputes, and Disney showing a stark contrast to their values, it seems that “Captain America: Brave New World” could indeed embody its title—but not necessarily in the way Disney intended.
