Title “Captain America: Brave New World” is now playing in cinemas, marking Sam Wilson’s (Anthony Mackie) debut as Captain America on the big screen. The film unfolds three years after the events of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”, focusing on Sam as he strives to uphold the legacy left by Steve Rogers (Chris Evans). Interestingly, the new “Captain America” film is also a continuation of “The Incredible Hulk”, featuring General Ross (Harrison Ford) and Samuel Sterns (Tim Blake Nelson) in significant roles. In regard to Sterns, who goes by “The Leader” in this movie, “Brave New World” fulfills the villain’s transformation hinted at in “The Incredible Hulk” and sets him up for a part in the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday”.
WARNING: Spoilers below for Captain America: Brave New World
In “Captain America: Brave New World,” we find out that Sterns was contaminated by Bruce Banner’s gamma-enhanced blood during “The Incredible Hulk.” Unlike the usual transformation into a towering, enraged creature, Sterns experienced an enhancement of his cognitive abilities. This upgrade allowed him to predict the likelihood of future events and even anticipate global-scale actions. Furthermore, his extraordinary intelligence enabled him to create mind control technology, which he utilized to orchestrate an assassination attempt on President Ross, setting the stage for the primary plot in “Brave New World.
In a complicated scheme to undermine Ross and his reputation, Sterns deliberately gets arrested by the authorities, following his revelation of his ties to the president. He’s then transported to the Raft (the ocean-based prison for super-powered individuals), which is where Sam found himself at the end of “Captain America: Civil War”. In the sole post-credits scene of “Brave New World”, Sam pays a visit to Sterns in the Raft. In this encounter, the villain cautions Sam that while the Avengers might be capable of protecting our planet, they may struggle when they’re forced to battle other heroes hailing from different worlds. Sterns emphasizes that he’s crunched the numbers, and suggests that various realities across the multiverse will soon collide.
Just as expected, the Leader is now poised for a significant role in the epic tale of Avengers: Doomsday.
The Leader Could Be a Key Figure in the Multiverse Saga
The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s epic tale through various universes, where history deviated from the main timeline, is what we call “The Multiversal Saga.” Loki provides insights on how the MCU’s Multiverse operates, while shows like “What If…?” and “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” delve into tales of these alternate paths. Furthermore, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” introduces the idea of Incursions – a catastrophic event where two timelines collide, causing one to annihilate the other, with unimaginable consequences for billions of lives across both realms.
In “Brave New World”, the Leader’s ominous warning hints at the concept of incursions. Sterns understands that Sam will need to guide the Avengers against heroes from different timeframes, facing the tough choice of whether they should protect the universe, potentially sacrificing another. Although specific details about “Avengers: Doomsday” are being kept secret, it’s clear that the upcoming crossover movie marks the start of a two-part story concluding in “Avengers: Secret Wars”. In the comics, the “Secret Wars” saga revolves around Incursions, as multiple realities collide, and the Avengers join forces with their counterparts to battle other counterparts for the sake of universal preservation.
Although it’s yet to be determined exactly how Incursions will factor into “Avengers: Doomsday”, there’s no doubt that they will play a significant role. Marvel Studios has announced the return of Robert Downey Jr., who will portray Doctor Doom, a villain whose actions sparked the second “Secret Wars” comic book event. Furthermore, whispers about the reunion of the original Avengers, including Chris Evans, have been circulating. The premise of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” being set in an alternate reality prior to their integration into the Sacred Timeline also hints at the prominence of Incursions within the Multiverse Saga.
I firmly believe that Stern’s foresight of these impending catastrophic events positions him as a crucial ally for me and the New Avengers. His gamma-enhanced intellect could aid us in deciphering ways to reverse Doctor Doom’s actions on the Multiverse, and potentially be the key to safeguarding a few select heroes from the incursions. This alliance could bring about an intriguing situation, as I would find myself relying on someone who may not align with the Avengers’ values but who undeniably possesses the unique abilities needed to tackle this predicament effectively.
