It was reported that filmmaker Michael Bay, known for his work on Transformers, was taken into custody by authorities at the Vatican due to allegations of trespassing. Yet, some speculate this could have been a clever marketing tactic.
Michael posted a video on his Instagram of the event, calling it “The Great Vatican Break In”.

The video displayed Bay casually exploring the Vatican’s grounds and the Basilica di San Pietro. In the recording, he humorously declared, “I’ve just sneaked into the Vatican – I’m currently within its boundaries.” He also pointed out being seemingly alone when showcasing the interior of the Basilica. The video concluded with him stating that he was being led to a local detention center. He playfully suggested needing an audience with the Pope and confession. Lastly, it depicted a journalist and the emblem of EWTN News Nightly, a genuine news broadcast known for its Vatican coverage.
However, many viewers doubt that Michael Bay was legitimately arrested.
Why People Are Skeptical
Based on an article by Comic Book Resources, it’s the Lamborghini Huracán used as a police car in the footage that sparks questions. While these vehicles are indeed used for specific situations like emergency transport or high-speed pursuits, they aren’t typically deployed for handling minor offenses such as trespassing. Moreover, the video appears to lack evidence of an actual arrest, such as being placed in a police vehicle. Interestingly, Bay was heard stating, “I’ve got handcuffs on right now,” while being escorted, which might suggest otherwise.
In my view, it seems rather peculiar that he was still able to film during the alleged arrest. Another point of discrepancy lies in the way the so-called law enforcement officials managed the situation. If this were a genuine police arrest, they would have instructed him to halt filming and forcefully led him away from the premises. However, the video reveals that they trailed behind him at a distance, allowing him to record without interruption. What’s more, there’s a brief instant where his wrists appear uncuffed on camera.
As a devoted fan, I noticed something intriguing during his statement “I’m the only one in here.” Interestingly, a boom microphone was visible at that moment. This detail, on its own, hints at a discrepancy because those microphones necessitate at least one person to operate them. This contradiction of his claim to be alone, coupled with the presence of this equipment, strongly suggests that a film crew might have been present. This observation aligns with the online theories circulating about this event possibly being staged.
A Pattern of Publicity Stunts?
He’s not a first-timer; he’s done it before. In 2023, Bay found himself in hot water over a pigeon’s demise on the set of 6 Underground, Rome. Killing pigeons is apparently against the law in Italy. Bay expressed confidence that justice would be served, asserting he was never officially charged for animal cruelty. The controversy surrounding the incident undeniably boosted the film’s publicity, fueling speculation that this recent “arrest” might also have been orchestrated.
Additionally, although Michael Bay has a reputation for creating dramatic films, there’s been no confirmation of his arrest by the police. Furthermore, among his ongoing projects – an adaptation of “Skibidi Toilet”, Netflix’s “Fast and Loose”, and the documentary “We Are Storror” about seven skilled parkour athletes – none seem to be linked with Rome or the Vatican.
It’s tough to determine if what was shown in the video was genuine or merely a publicity strategy. There’s no concrete evidence to support it as truth.
