Elden Ring Nightreign Disables Multiplayer Passwords for Weekend Playtest

Update: Similar to Friday’s gameplay test, multiplayer matchmaking via passwords won’t be available during the Saturday playtest from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Pacific Time. FromSoftware announced this change in a tweet posted on Saturday, right before the test began.

As an enthusiast, I’d be thrilled if I were playing Elden Ring Nightreign tonight, either on my PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, during the Elden Ring spin-off’s second playtest. However, it’s important to note that Bandai Namco and FromSoftware have chosen to disable multiplayer matchmaking via passwords for this specific Nightreign session running from 7-10 p.m. PT on February 14th. This means you won’t be able to play with your friends during this time, as the announcement was made just before the second playtest started, and players were advised not to set a multiplayer password at all throughout the session.

Minutes before the commencement of the second Elden Ring Nightreign playtest, their social media posts hinted at some dissatisfaction regarding the multiplayer aspect. Unfortunately, they didn’t provide a reason, but if you have a multiplayer password enabled, it might be best to disable it temporarily to ensure you can join a game smoothly.

For the approaching #NIGHTREIGN trial run, we’ll temporarily disable Multiplayer Password matchmaking. Please refrain from setting a Multiplayer Password during this time, as you won’t be able to find matchmaking options. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Even though there’s no formal reason given, it’s easy to speculate that the change was probably due to one of two possibilities. The less probable scenario is that FromSoftware wants to gather data on how Nightreign performs when players are matched randomly without friend connections in multiplayer mode. On the other hand, a more likely explanation is that disabling passwords for multiplayer could result in a smoother gameplay experience, as this morning saw numerous disconnects so frequent they might have led to another Nightreign test session. It’s possible both factors are at play, but don’t plan on playing with friends tonight, regardless of the reason behind the change.

In tonight’s gameplay session for Elden Ring Nightreign, you can choose to play either alone or in groups of three, but not two. This means that other players will still be matched with you during the game. However, remember to turn off the multiplayer password if you had it enabled this morning, as keeping it on will prevent matchmaking from happening.
