Why Isn’t Evelyn Vogel in Dexter: Original Sin? The Shocking Truth Revealed!

In the new series “Dexter: Original Sin,” a crucial character from the original show is noticeably absent, and series creator Clyde Phillips explains why. The initial “Dexter” series, which aired from 2006 to 2013, was known for unveiling significant aspects of Dexter’s past. By the time the storyline begins, Dexter is in his mid-30s and has been killing for approximately 15 years. However, the experiences that fundamentally influenced his bloodlust are obscured from his memory. Throughout the original series, we gradually discover that he was emotionally scarred by his mother’s death when he was young and was manipulated by his father into transforming into a serial killer vigilante as an outlet for his violent impulses.

In season 8 of Dexter, a fresh dimension was added to Dexter’s backstory. It turned out that Harry wasn’t working alone but was in touch with a neuropsychiatrist named Evelyn Vogel, whose field is psychopathy. It was later disclosed that Evelyn Vogel was the one who conceived the Code, and Harry refined it with his law enforcement background after recognizing Dexter’s psychopathic traits as a child. Interestingly, even after Dexter’s third victim, Harry consulted with Vogel and unveiled that Dexter had been showing his victims pictures of their intended victims before executing them.

Why Evelyn Vogel Isn’t in Dexter: Original Sin

As a devoted fan, it’s hard not to imagine that Evelyn Vogel, the co-creator of Harry’s Code, would be central to the storyline in Dexter: Original Sin, given her deep connection to the enigmatic Harry and the profound impact she has on both Dexter and Brian Moser. However, surprisingly, Evelyn Vogel is neither seen nor mentioned in season one of Dexter: Original Sin. During an interview with egmr.ru, I asked showrunner Clyde Phillips about this omission, and his response was straightforward – there are no plans for Evelyn Vogel to appear in the prequel series at this time.

Phillips explained, “The topic of Dr. Vogel never surfaced during our writing sessions. When we’re crafting a thriller, it’s essential to have the ending planned out first. We imagine walking backwards from that final point, with each room representing an episode until we reach our destination. Additionally, there are scenes we call NPO, or ‘no particular order,’ which we write down on a board. Approximately 35-40% of these scenes end up in the series, but we don’t know where they’ll fit initially. We focus on the episodes that align with the story and the characters, as both are paramount. In truth, Dr. Vogel didn’t cross my mind during the writing process.

It’s important to mention that Clyde Phillips contributed to the first four seasons of the original Dexter series. Later, he moved on to work on another Showtime production, Nurse Jackie, and thus didn’t participate in the development of Evelyn Vogel. It might be that Phillips isn’t keen on dealing with a character outside his initial concept for the show, especially one potentially conflicting with his ideas for Harry and Dexter. Nevertheless, Phillips is enthusiastic about creating more seasons of Dexter: Original Sin, hoping to explore how Dexter evolves into the serial killer vigilante we know from the original series. It’s unlikely that Vogel will feature in any future storylines related to this.

Currently, “Dexter: Original Sin” hasn’t received official confirmation for a second season, but production is underway for “Dexter: Resurrection,” a new sequel series featuring Michael C. Hall reprising his role. This upcoming show, set to air this summer, might not be the last we hear about “Dexter: Original Sin.” What storylines would you like to see in a potential future season of “Dexter: Original Sin”?
