Despite not getting a dazzling Super Bowl trailer for Superman, fans were treated to an intriguing focus on Guy Gardner as a temporary treat. As we patiently anticipate the intense marketing campaign, a fresh TV advertisement aired on NBA on TNT showcasing the charismatic trio of David Corenswet, James Gunn, and NBA legend and passionate Superman fan Shaquille O’Neal. In the commercial, Shaq is in top form and even takes a playful jab at Charles Barkley before it concludes. You can catch the entire TV spot by watching the video below.
The video begins by showing Shaquille O’Neal examining the latest Superman costume on display, but his appreciation for the suit goes beyond mere admiration. In fact, he’s making a physical assessment, noting that the boots are too small and expressing some concern about whether he can still fit into it comfortably.
Shaq stated that the boots and belt are too small for him, as they wouldn’t fit, and he mentioned that he had already provided his measurements. Later, Corenswet approached with a distinct Clark Kent aura, inquiring about Shaq’s activities.
According to Shaq, he was expected to collaborate with James Gunn for the upcoming Superman film. However, instead of meeting Shaq, Gunn presented Corenswet as Superman, causing a humorous reaction from Shaq. He eventually made the connection to the poster depicting them, but Shaq seemed unimpressed and decided to leave the scene.
Gunn urges Shaq to behave differently, but Shaq seems uninterested and leaves, albeit content with briefly mimicking flying in the hallway. Mentioning Shaq’s TNT colleague Charles Barkley, however, doesn’t sit well with him, as he expresses his displeasure by saying something to the effect of “I don’t like Barkley” before exiting the room.
Fans who have kept up with Shaquille O’Neal’s career are aware that he is an ardent admirer of Superman, often using the nickname “Superman” during his basketball years. Gunn further acknowledges Shaq as one of the pioneering superheroes, hinting at his role as Steel in a nod to his past.
It’s intriguing to observe how DC and Warner Bros. Discovery have been promoting Superman so far, opting for quirky one-offs like the Guy Gardner video and others instead of the usual flood of trailers and TV commercials. Although fans crave more glimpses of the movie, let’s hope these engaging videos and ads remain a part of their promotional strategy.
