In “Captain America: Brave New World“, Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson assumes the role of Captain America from Steve Rogers. Alongside Joaquin Torres, the latest Falcon, they undertake perilous missions for the United States. However, Wilson remains uncertain about his readiness to fully step into Cap’s shoes and is hesitant about working with Torres, as neither possesses superhuman abilities. Yet, their sense of duty compels them when a global crisis erupts, escalating the tension between the U.S. and Japan over Celestial Island and its valuable metal, adamantium. Unsurprisingly, these events are masterminded by someone seeking vengeance.
The reviews for Captain America: Brave New World are somewhat divided. While it effectively ties into the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe and showcases some strong points, it also encounters difficulties such as inconsistent pacing, plot inconsistencies, and insufficiently explored character motivations. These issues might stem from the multiple reshoots undertaken, leading to a somewhat disjointed final product. Nevertheless, there’s one crucial aspect where the movie seems to miss the mark—a misstep that could have significantly strengthened its presence within the MCU.
WARNING: Spoilers below for Captain America: Brave New World
Captain America: Brave New World Needed More Hulks
As a seasoned movie critic, I found myself utterly captivated by “Captain America: Brave New World.” This exhilarating installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe not only serves as a sequel to the Captain America saga but also cleverly weaves together plotlines initiated in Disney+’s “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and the 2021 blockbuster, “Eternals.”
Interestingly, this film shares a profound connection with “The Incredible Hulk,” a Marvel tale that has, to some extent, been overshadowed in the grand scheme of the MCU. The return of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, now portrayed by Harrison Ford (replacing the late William Hurt), and the reappearance of Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns/Leader, significantly contribute to this intriguing narrative link.
Initially, Sterns was a cellular biologist striving to alleviate Bruce Banner’s affliction. Unfortunately, during their encounter, Sterns’ blood got mixed with Banner’s radioactive blood by mistake. Unlike Banner, who gained immense strength and size upon transformation, Sterns experienced an extraordinary surge in intelligence, albeit at the cost of a distorted physical appearance in his cranium. He is now masterminding the global crisis as retaliation against Ross for breaking his pledge to free Sterns from captivity.
In the course of his strategy, Sterns gave Ross medication to manage his heart issue concurrently, exposing his system to gamma radiation. This factor is later demonstrated in the movie as Ross transforming into the colossal Red Hulk.
In a twist that might surprise some fans, the connections and recurring characters found in Brave New World seem to tie it more closely to The Incredible Hulk rather than the Captain America series. While this isn’t necessarily a negative aspect, it would have been exciting to see Bruce Banner’s Hulk or Jennifer Walters’ She-Hulk make an appearance. Remarkably, Liv Tyler reprises her role as Betty Ross to reconcile with her long-estranged father. Given that the creators of Brave New World were open to working with an actress who hasn’t been in the MCU for almost two decades, it seems plausible that they could have included a cameo from Mark Ruffalo or Tatiana Maslany.
Too Many MCU Connections? Or Not Enough?
One appealing aspect of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is its interwoven nature, reflecting the original stories where characters from one series appear in another. The convergence and interplay of various storylines, as well as the hidden references (Easter eggs) scattered throughout for keen-eyed viewers to discover, are significant elements that distinguish the MCU from other franchises.
Although Brave New World draws heavily from previous films and TV shows, this adaptation raises several intriguing questions about the choices made regarding which plotlines were pursued while others were left behind. For instance, it was exciting to witness characters reappearing after an extended absence in the MCU, but one can’t help but ponder why Brave New World chose to focus on specific narrative arcs instead of exploring pressing issues like the delay in addressing Celestial Island or the whereabouts of Steve Rogers.
Marvel Studios’ recent productions have shown some inconsistencies; Brave New World could have served as a chance to restore narrative coherence by centering the story on expanding Sam Wilson’s role within the larger MCU, while limiting references to other films and series. While it’s enjoyable to spot cameos from characters or events in other movies, they should not compromise a well-structured plot and well-defined character motivations.
