Cobra Kai Creators Want to Make Back to the Future Sequel Series (But Will It Happen?)

With the conclusion of “Cobra Kai”, the creative minds behind its resurgence within the Karate Kid universe are eagerly planning their next step, which involves breathing life into another iconic ’80s movie franchise. In the closing scenes of the final episode of “Cobra Kai”, co-creators Josh Heald and Jon Hurwitz made a brief appearance as film producers in a restaurant setting. They playfully discussed pitching a follow-up series to “Back to the Future”, effectively suggesting that they might restart the “Cobra Kai” narrative with a fresh franchise.

They ended the series with a humorous remark, but there’s also some truth to their plans for the future. In an interview with People (alongside co-creator Hayden Schlossberg), Heald and Hurwitz expressed their readiness to work on something new related to Back to the Future; they’re simply waiting for the chance to do so.

Hurwtiz explained, ‘That’s simply us enjoying ourselves.’ We are aware that the Back to the Future series is something precious and rightfully protected. If they were to consider a sequel someday, we would definitely be eager to participate.

According to what I’ve gathered, it appears they might be open to hearing a new idea presented by someone, as Hurwitz noted, so let’s wait and find out.

In a different gathering, Hurwitz shared with People that he thinks the initial creative group for Back to the Future would prefer the movie to receive a reboot similar to Cobra Kai.

He mentioned that based on everything he’s read and comprehended (and he admits he might not have looked at trade publications in a couple of weeks), Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis, the creators of “Back to the Future,” seem keen on making something happen. They’ve been advocating for years for someone to overhaul the “Back to the Future” universe. He poses the question: who could be more suitable than us? However, he emphasizes that ultimately, it’s their decision. So, he’s eager to know if they have any thoughts on this potential development.

Will There Be a Back to the Future Sequel Series?

It appears that the Cobra Kai group is optimistic about the possibility of a sequel series with the Back to the Future team, but statements by Bob Gale suggest otherwise.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’m often asked, “When will there be a Back to the Future 4?” A question that I answered earlier this year with a firm response: “Never, and I stand by that.” So, feel free to quote me on that!

When those remarks were shown to the creators of Cobra Kai, Heald commented that Gale was merely attempting to play tough negotiating tactics.

“It’s the chase,” he explained. “They’re definitely negging us. … That’s how the union is born.”
