Funko Fusion’s Epic Flop Sparks Layoffs at 10:10 Games Studio

Last year, the video game titled Funko Fusion was launched on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. However, the response it received, both commercially and critically, wasn’t as expected. The game currently has a Metacritic score of 54, indicating middling reviews, and it appears sales weren’t significantly better. This underperformance is believed to have led to recent job cuts at developer 10:10 Games, according to Insider Gaming. Funko Fusion was the studio’s debut game, and the lukewarm reception seems to have made it challenging for them to secure enough funding for multiple projects. Consequently, approximately 20 employees were informed that there wasn’t enough work available for the entire team.

Based on reports from Insider Gaming, it’s been suggested that employees were encouraged to use their vacation time during the holiday season by company officials. This supposedly aimed to prevent having to pay out accrued vacation time after staff redundancies occurred. These dismissed employees have further stated that no severance packages are being provided and only the absolute legal minimum is being given to those who were let go. As of now, 10:10 Games has not issued any statement regarding the layoffs.

Over the past few years, job cuts in the video game industry have unfortunately become a recurring event, affecting studios of all scales. The troubles with Funko Fusion fall under this unfortunate pattern. Regrettably, there were several indications that the game might face difficulties before its release. Although Funko Pop figurines once ruled the market, it appears that public interest in these toys has waned, with many ending up as waste in landfills. Despite securing the rights to popular intellectual properties like Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, and Five Nights at Freddy’s, Funko Fusion didn’t seem to spark much enthusiasm among gamers.

Currently, it’s uncertain how this new DLC for Universal Monsters in Funko Fusion might impact future assistance for the game. On Valentine’s Day, they introduced a DLC pack featuring characters from classic Universal Monsters like Dracula, Wolf Man, the Invisible Man, and Bride of Frankenstein. Interestingly, a physical version of Funko Fusion is set to launch on Nintendo Switch next month.

If the assessment in this report is correct and Funko Fusion has indeed turned out to be a major flop, it’s plausible that 10:10 Games might divert their attention towards their upcoming project, potentially abandoning any further content development for the game. This move could undeniably disappoint fans of Funko Fusion, yet it remains uncertain about the extent of additional content they were planning. If there was more in store, redirecting resources from a supposedly failed game might help 10:10 Games recover. It’s hoped that 10:10 Games will offer some clarity regarding these layoffs soon and shed light on what’s transpiring within the studio.
