Earlier this month, I found myself paddling my kayak along the coast of southern Chile, side by side with my devoted father, Dell Simancas. In an unexpected turn of events, a colossal humpback whale surfaced near us, momentarily enveloping me and my kayak within its jaws before releasing us back into the water. Miraculously, I emerged from this extraordinary encounter unscathed. My father captured the incident on video, which has since garnered widespread attention online.

In a recent conversation, Adrián shared his experience of getting swallowed by a whale’s mouth, initially unaware that it was a whale.

In an interview with CNN on February 14, he described the moment as if a massive blow had hit him from behind. However, it was far more intense than anything he’d ever experienced before. When he turned to see what it was, he perceived a mix of dark blue and white colors flashing, accompanied by a slimy sensation on his cheek. Then, everything went black, and he was dragged underwater.

In an interview with CNN, I shared that all of a sudden, I was enveloped – not unlike being struck by a strong wave from behind. Yet, this was no ordinary wave; it was incredibly intense. When I turned to face the source, I beheld a blend of dark blues and whites, flashing brightly against my features, and a slimy texture brushed against my cheek. Then, without warning, it enclosed me and dragged me underwater.

Adrian mentioned that he thought he was enclosed within an animal’s jaw, though he didn’t realize it was a whale. This situation reminded him of a specific Disney movie.

In a blink of an eye, it seemed like minutes had passed as my mind was racing with thoughts. Suddenly, the tale of Pinocchio, the classic 1940 animated film, popped into my head. Quite unexpectedly, I found myself reminiscing about young Geppetto’s wooden puppet being swallowed by the monstrous whale named Monstro. It took me aback, as I hadn’t anticipated this flashback at all.

Adrián said he could have lost his life had he been swallowed by a different creature.

Initially, it seemed like I was facing certain death since I was trapped within a colossal sea creature’s maw. However, it turned out to be a whale, and I had no moment to understand that I was not in imminent peril.

In an instant, I experienced a colossal jolt, and the next moment found me enveloped in utter darkness. Despite the blackness, I could discern movement, and I felt the immense pressure of a whale’s powerful jaws closing around me as he contracted his mouth muscles.

He mentioned that within barely over a minute of complete darkness, “I perceived light, and then he began moving his head from side to side, and the very next moment found me outside.

In essence, while a humpback whale’s enormous mouth, spanning approximately 10 feet, is large enough to enclose a human, it is scientifically implausible for the whale to consume a person whole due to its physiological structure, as explained by expert Nicola Hodgins from the Whale and Dolphin Conservation organization based in the U.K.
