Live from New York, it’s a too-real joke.
The special episode of SNL 50 titled “The Anniversary Special” has arrived! In one segment, popular alums Tina Fey and Amy Poehler answered questions from a star-studded audience. During this time, Ryan Reynolds subtly acknowledged his ongoing legal dispute with Justin Baldoni regarding him and his wife Blake Lively.
When someone asks Ryan how he’s doing, he responds by saying, “I’m doing great,” followed by a brief pause, then inquires, “What brings that question up? Is there something I should know?
Amy and Tina immediately replied with a litany of “no, nothing,” while flashing Ryan a thumbs up.
Blake, sitting next to her husband, swiftly turned her gaze toward Ryan following the joke. Maintaining a deliberately expressionless visage, she waited until the Deadpool star finished asking his question before breaking into a smile.
The situation appeared to allude to the ongoing saga involving the couple and Justin, famously known for his role in and direction of “It Ends With Us,” as well as Wayfarer Studios, since the movie’s release a few months ago.
However, the drama involving Justin isn’t the only real-life situation that Saturday Night Live has decided to poke fun at. In the show’s opening monologue, comedians Steve Martin and John Mulaney took a moment to shine a light on the numerous celebrities who have hosted the show throughout the years – the admirable, the questionable, and the controversial.
John made this remark during the show’s opening: “In a span of 50 years, 894 individuals have hosted Saturday Night Live, and I find it astonishing that merely two of them have been involved in murder cases.” This statement indirectly referred to the murder trial of O.J. Simpson, who appeared on the show in 1978, as well as frequent host Alec Baldwin, whose manslaughter charges related to the fatal shooting on ‘Rust’ were dropped last year.
Later on, John jabbed at Steve, remarking playfully, “Every week, a fresh celebrity host brings their unique energy, causing quite the shake-up. However, that’s never been an issue for you, Steve, since you possess no distinct style or flair.
During the Weekend Update segment, Colin Jost subtly referred to Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs’ ongoing legal issues.
During the conversation about the numerous celebrities present, it got to a point where even an adjacent studio at 30 Rock was filled. In jest, Colin remarked that one of them was observing from the Metropolitan Detention Center, located in Brooklyn.
Meanwhile, as a photo of the rapper flashed up on the screen, causing laughter from the audience, Colin playfully commented, “So, you attended those wild parties, huh?
