For two generations now, Xbox has maintained its position as number three in the competitive console market, often referred to as the “console wars.” Notably, Xbox’s hardware sales have been declining annually, and Microsoft has expanded its first-party game publishing across multiple platforms like PlayStation and Switch. This situation has led many to question how long Xbox hardware will continue being a viable product. Analogies to Sega, the last major platform holder to leave the market and focus on third-party publishing, are increasingly common.
In a recent conversation with XboxEra, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer acknowledged these very issues – digital ownership of purchases and cross-platform compatibility – as valid concerns.
Spencer expressed his understanding and respect towards individuals expressing their concerns, saying “I understand your points,” instead of “To me, like I get it.” He also emphasized his commitment to never disrespect anyone voicing their worries. Additionally, he shared his love for Xbox games and wanted assurance that he would continue to play them as usual. His questions were about the future of hardware, whether they could still access games in the same manner, if renting games would be a new requirement, or if buying games would still be an option.
I understand your concerns. I understand your questions as well. Throughout the years, we’ve demonstrated our respect for people’s libraries by maintaining compatibility and offering Play Anywhere. My intention is to keep this tradition going. We don’t aim to force everyone into a single business model. Instead, play the games in whichever way suits you best.
Spencer elaborated on the swift expansion of PC and cloud systems serving as platforms, explaining that Microsoft’s strategic emphasis on both areas has attracted a significant influx of new participants in expanding industries. In essence, this strategy is aimed at supporting the growth of Xbox.
Spencer emphasized the importance of running a successful business while making as many choices as possible for the games we offer, to attract more and more players. He explained that our expansion into Windows and Cloud platforms has been key to our growth, with Asia being one of our fastest-growing regions. This isn’t due to increased console sales in Asia, but rather the discovery of more users through cloud and PC services year after year. The platform seeing the most rapid growth is Cloud, which is attracting players like the radio host you mentioned, who we wouldn’t have reached with our consoles alone. Therefore, we aim to find ways to connect with these players effectively, ultimately benefiting games like Indiana Jones and Xbox as a whole.
As a passionate gamer, I’ve been pondering if Xbox will ever return to its traditional console form, and honestly, it seems rather doubtful at this point. However, Microsoft has made it clear they aren’t giving up on dedicated gaming hardware anytime soon. They’ve even confirmed the development of a portable gaming device, and there are whispers that the next Xbox console might hit the market as early as 2026.
