Warning: This story contains spoilers for The White Lotus season three episode one.
A familiar face is checking back in at The White Lotus resort.
At the premiere of HBO’s third season on February 16th, Jon Gries reappeared unexpectedly in the show. His character, Greg, had a significant romance with Tanya (portrayed by Jennifer Coolidge) during the first season and made a brief comeback as her husband in the second season.
Toward the final moments of the initial episode, Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood) visited the hotel bar in Thailand following her boyfriend Rick’s (Walton Goggins) departure. While chatting with a stranger (Charlotte Le Bon), she discovered that this person was there to have a drink with her partner before gesturing towards Greg at another table.
In addition to Jon’s unexpected return for season three, Natasha Rothwell is also set to reappear in The White Lotus. HBO had earlier revealed that Rothwell will reprise her character Belinda in the series, with Parker Posey, Jason Isaacs, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sarah Catherine Hook, and Sam Nivola joining the cast for this season.
It’s worth noting that Jon’s character is the only one who might still have an unresolved storyline from seasons one and two. This is because in the final episode of season 2, Tanya found out that her husband, Quentin (played by Tom Hollander), may have been setting her up to be murdered by his suspected lover. Although she was able to prevent the plan by killing her captors, she unfortunately slipped and fell off the yacht while attempting to escape on a smaller boat and ended up losing her life.
In this ongoing season, fans will have an opportunity to discover the extent of Greg’s involvement in Tanya’s attempted murder and the rationale behind such actions, as these details are still unknown to us.
Earlier, Jon had encouraged viewers not to consider a certain explanation for his character’s feelings towards his wife – the speculation that he never loved her. However, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2022, he expressed his personal view that indeed, his character does love her.
Jon added, “Greg might not be romantically in love with her, but I believe there’s something about her that he cares for deeply.” He went on, “It’s clear they’ve been together for some time. Whether it’s due to emotional ties or financial reasons, I can’t say for certain.
Episode two of The White Lotus will arrive on HBO Max Feb. 23 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
