Civilization 7’s Random Map Generator Still Needs Some Work

Civilization VII is an engaging and fitting continuation of the series, but there are definitely areas for enhancement. Players have already spotted some peculiarities in how the game generates random maps, which isn’t ideal given that these games are designed for endless replayability, especially since its official release has only been a few days.

On Reddit, someone shared a rather clear illustration of an issue, which seems to stem from certain new features in the game, particularly those designed to replicate the sensation of discovery in the Exploration Era (credit to TheGamer). It appears that the default map named Continents Plus might be causing most of the problems, but maps like Fractal and Archipelago are also experiencing similar issues.

Occasionally, shear lines can cleanly divide landmasses. Moreover, the island chains designed to keep civilizations apart (the updated Distant Lands mechanic) appear as consistent, upright bands. These islands provide secure havens from the deep sea tiles that demand specialized technology for safe navigation.

These peculiarities, along with others, continue to appear across different map settings, and while they don’t necessarily ruin the game, once you become aware of them, they are hard to overlook. However, we hope that game developer Firaxis will update their random seed generator in future versions, enhancing the experience and keeping it fresh, even long after its initial release.
