Following last week’s routine and uneventful State of Play, there has been considerable discussion in various media outlets about the possibility of Microsoft releasing more games on the PS5 compared to Sony this year.
The headline suggests PlayStation is resting on its laureurs, enjoying the profits from the struggles of its competitors’ console businesses. This prediction was made by this author at the beginning of the year.
In our January predictions, I mused that Microsoft might become the largest game publisher for the PlayStation 5 by 2025.
Since then, Microsoft’s Redmond-based company has unveiled Forza Horizon 5, Age of Empires 2, and Age of Mythology for Sony’s platform; there are whispers that Hellblade 2, Gears of War Trilogy, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and numerous others not yet named may follow.
This year seems to be a significant one for Xbox Game Studios on PlayStation 5, as the multi-billion-dollar tech giant is not just launching new games from its collection but also re-releasing some of the old favorites.
To be honest, it’s a bit irksome when people compare the Team in Green to PlayStation Studios on their own platform. It seems strange that similar comparisons aren’t made for other third-party firms like Take-Two or Sega, both of which are also set to have impressive years on the PS5.
While the notion that Xbox Game Studios might release more games for PlayStation than Sony could potentially grab attention with a headline, such a statement overlooks the bigger picture. Microsoft is delving into its extensive library of classic games and remastering popular titles, in addition to developing new ones; Forza Horizon 5, despite performing well on the PS5, should not be dismissed as it’s close to four years old now.
Moreover, it overlooks the crucial aspect in every scenario: Microsoft has unconventionally acquired two publishers that were previously independent in the industry, Sony’s PlayStation Studios and its limited number of around 14 development teams. The size of Xbox’s operation is so vast compared to these teams that it would be impossible for them to compete, regardless of any missteps in their live service strategies. In essence, this is merely a matter of numbers.
Instead of implying that Sony is retreating due to less competition, it’s important to note that they have a robust lineup set for 2025, which includes the eagerly awaited sequels such as Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Ghost of Yotei. Their impressive performance at DICE with ten awards from their 2024 releases, coupled with outstanding financial results, suggests that they are thriving rather than scaling back.
Indeed, the transformations happening at Microsoft seem worth exploring, and it appears Xbox Game Studios has an exciting slate of games lined up for PlayStation 5. Let’s see what they’ve got in store!
However, presented without necessary context, this approach could appear overly demanding or unjustified, implying that Sony might be wasting time rather than making progress.
If the large Japanese company does not acquire some publishing companies in the future, it will likely produce less content compared to Microsoft’s extensive multi-format output annually. This is just a reflection of current industry trends.
