This represents a substantial decline of more than half its audience!

Jon Lovitz, Kevin Nealon, and Siobhan Fallon Hogan, who were once part of the Saturday Night Live (SNL) cast, have expressed their views on the evolving comedy scene to Fox News Digital. They noted that stand-up comedy has become more pointed and sarcastic in recent times, a perception that seems to align with SNL’s current style as well.
As Nealon noted, when I first ventured into comedy, it was a completely distinct world. The era and the people involved were significantly different, and audiences had less tendency for brief focus. When you compare some of the sketches on SNL from back then to today’s, you’ll notice they were longer due to our increased attention span in those days. Additionally, comedy might have evolved into a more sarcastic form over time.
Lovitz reinforced his points by observing that nowadays, comedy tends to draw a lot of its humor from the realm of political discussions.
As a fan, I can’t help but notice how these comedians – Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, and Stephen Colbert – have shifted their focus towards politics more than before. Now, don’t get me wrong, I know these guys personally, they’re all genuinely nice, incredibly talented, and hilarious. However, their shows seem to be centered around political discussions a lot these days.
With each passing episode, Saturday Night Live (SNL) seems increasingly focused on political satire, a fact underscored by the recent criticism leveled at Tom Hanks’ latest appearance. This backlash indicates that SNL, once cherished for its late-night comedy, is having trouble striking a chord with a wider range of viewers.
