The eagerly anticipated remake of Red Sonja is set to hit UK cinemas later this year, but a precise release date has yet to be disclosed, nor is there any information about its global rollout in other countries. Red Sonja is a character originally crafted by Robert E. Howard, who’s famously known for creating Conan the Barbarian; the upcoming movie adaption will be inspired by the comic book series published by Dynamite Entertainment. Directed by M. J. Bassett, Red Sonja boasts Matilda Lutz in the lead role, supported by Wallis Day as Annisia, Robert Sheehan as Draygan, Michael Bisping as Hawk, and Martyn Ford as General Karlak.
The specifics of the storyline are yet to be revealed, but the movie is expected to center around the fierce huntress Red Sonja, who rallies a band of tough warriors to liberate their oppressed people from the rule of the wicked Dragan The Magnificent and his partner, Dark Annisia.
As reported by Deadline, Begüm Kayacan Parodi, Acquisitions Manager at Signature Entertainment who acquired the distribution rights for the UK and Ireland, expressed that Red Sonja aligns with the type of film they seek at Signature. This is a grand tale set in a fantasy realm with a commercial edge to its production, making it instantly attractive to them. They’re excited to bring Matilda Lutz’s sword-wielding heroine to UK and Irish audiences later this year.
Red Sonja made her debut in the movie named after her in 1985, a production designed to cash in on the popularity of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s films, Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer. Regrettably, the movie failed spectacularly, halting any potential sequels for quite some time.
The project initiated by Robert Rodriguez in 2008 was set to star his partner at the time, Rose McGowan, as the main character. Unfortunately, this project didn’t materialize, with multiple directors and studios involved over subsequent years. Plans even existed to film the movie before the launch of the sequel to the 2011 Conan the Barbarian reboot, but that never came to fruition.
One clear indication that a “Red Sonja” movie was imminent was in 2018 when it was disclosed that Bryan Singer, known for directing “X-Men” and “Superman Returns,” had agreed to take the helm. Unfortunately, following allegations of sexual assault made against him by several individuals, this project also came to a halt.
Ultimately, Tasha Huo joined as the screenwriter in 2021, with filming commencing the year after. The movie Red Sonja spent close to two years in post-production before Millennium Media sealed a distribution agreement with Signature Entertainment. J.J. Nugent, President of International Sales and Distribution at Millennium Media, expressed his excitement about this partnership with Signature Entertainment for the UK release, stating, “We’re ecstatic to collaborate with Signature Entertainment to present Red Sonja to audiences in the UK. This franchise has a dedicated international following, and we can’t wait to unveil a film that preserves its heritage while appealing to a new generation.
