As a devoted fan, I recently found myself reflecting on the reasons behind Shuhei Yoshida’s transition from working with first-party PlayStation studios to collaborating with indie developers, following his departure from Sony last month. In an enlightening interview with VentureBeat, he candidly shared that this shift was essentially a matter of necessity, as it boiled down to embracing this new role or parting ways with PlayStation altogether.
Additionally, he points out that he accepted the role due to his strong convictions towards the PlayStation corporation and its position within the console industry.
Yoshida stated, ‘Transitioning from working with first-parties to independent developers? To be honest, it wasn’t a decision I made lightly.’ He explained, ‘When offered the chance to work with indie developers, the options were either take that role or leave the company. However, my passion for PlayStation and independent studios was too strong, and I felt compelled to contribute in this area. I wanted to make a unique impact.’
Yoshida additionally pointed out that transitioning from collaborating with established developers to independent creators brought about a more significant shift in his life compared to departing from the company since January. Furthermore, he discussed his role as a mentor-like figure for smaller development teams while working with indie developers.
Yoshida stated that the shift from working at a first-party studio to collaborating with independent studios was a more significant change for him on a personal level than leaving his company this year. He feels fortunate that the indie community and the publishers and developers he works closely with, recognize his abilities and are willing to utilize his assistance.
I took on the role of an advisor for certain companies, and I’ve been collaborating with several indie publishers and developers whom I hold in high regard. Moving from Sony to become an independent advisor feels more like a natural evolution rather than a significant shift away from being a first-party entity.
In the end, Yoshida assumed his position in a manner that significantly enhanced Sony’s relationships with its independent development partners, reaching a point where his role became redundant. His departure from the company was signaled by several factors, including the fact that Jim Ryan, a former head of PlayStation, was also planning to leave.
When I began working at the independent job, my aim was to ensure that my role became unnecessary,” stated Yoshida. “I wanted the company to thrive to such an extent that it wouldn’t need someone like me to emphasize its importance. And I believe we have managed to do just that.
Although there’s much more work ahead, progress is being made. With Jim departing and both Nishino and Hermen taking on increased roles, I found reassurance in our efforts to support independent creators. Consequently, I chose to move on.
Currently, Yoshida is serving as an autonomous consultant for video game creators. Previously, he shared insights about his time at PlayStation following the announcement of his departure from the company. The year 2025 marked the conclusion of his 31-year journey with the company on January 15th.
As a devoted admirer, I can share that in past conversations, I’ve mentioned Sony’s emphasis on live-service games and my initial resistance to this strategy. I felt strongly that PlayStation would thrive more with an abundance of single-player titles. Moreover, I voiced concerns about the potential risks associated with the launch of Helldivers 2, expressing curiosity about its ultimate outcome.
