Cynthia Erivo, famed for her portrayal of Elphaba in “Wicked” and for expressing strong emotions towards perceived slights by fans, finds herself at the heart of another debate as she assumes the lead role of Jesus Christ in the Hollywood Bowl’s rendition of “Jesus Christ Superstar” this summer.
While Erivo seems thrilled about the casting, many Christians are not.

Starting from August 1st through the 3rd, the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical will take place at our venue, with Sergio Trujillo handling both directing and choreography, and Stephen Oremus serving as the music director and conductor. At this point, further casting details are still undisclosed, but Erivo’s involvement has stirred controversy among many who view it as a disrespect to their religious convictions.
In 2020, Cynthia Erivo, known for her role as Mary Magdalene in the album “Jesus Christ Superstar: She Is Risen,” will now assume the role of Jesus Christ. This new portrayal includes performances of potent songs such as “Hosanna,” “The Last Supper,” and “Gethsemane.” For some Christians, the idea of their Messiah being racially changed, gender-swapped, and depicted by an actress who is in a same-sex relationship may be highly upsetting.
In today’s climate where some believe that Hollywood prioritizes contentious casting choices over upholding cultural and religious values, Cynthia Erivo’s casting seems yet another example of putting agendas ahead of authenticity. The plan to re-cast Jesus Christ, a figure admired by billions, is seen by many as an intentional disregard for their faith. Additionally, Erivo’s pattern of making every project about her personal identity only intensifies the controversy.

On previous occasions, Erivo has encountered criticism. A recent incident involved her strong reaction to a mistake with a Wicked poster, suggesting she may react defensively to any form of critique. Currently, in her role as Jesus, Erivo appears to be inviting controversy instead of prioritizing respect for the material and its intended audience.
Many Christians ponder: Why does Hollywood persistently modify sacred characters to align with contemporary viewpoints? Representing Jesus Christ is not merely playing a part; it’s portraying a figure profoundly significant in the Christian religion. Changing both the character’s gender and race, as well as casting someone whose lifestyle contradicts traditional Christian values, is perceived by many as an intentional provocation.
In simpler terms, Viola Davis’ statement on Instagram, “I’m rather swamped this summer and can hardly wait,” might not spark joy among many Christians due to its nature.

Given the ongoing sensitivity regarding Hollywood’s perceived neglect of faith-based viewers, this action seems like another disappointing blow. The query persists: when might Hollywood start appreciating its audience more, rather than pushing them away with such contentious choices?
