Fans of the animated film Lilo & Stitch, which first came out in 2002, might be surprised to learn just how intricate the story of Experiment 626 is on-screen. Since its debut, there have been numerous direct-to-video sequels, an American animated TV series, and even an anime series (with only five episodes ever aired in the US). With the upcoming live-action adaptation set to hit theaters this summer, Disney+ subscribers are finding themselves immersed in the vast world of Stitch.
Disney Plus has introduced a daily lineup of top streamed content, much like Netflix and other platforms do, and yesterday’s list showcased an unexpected hit from the Stitch universe. The 2005 direct-to-video film, “Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch“, has skyrocketed in popularity on the platform, landing at number six in the overall Top 10 for yesterday on Disney+.
Similar to many Disney sequels from the ’90s and ’00s, Lilo & Stitch 2 didn’t garner much attention among fans due to not having a theatrical release. Additionally, it may have been missed by some as it wasn’t the initial Lilo & Stitch sequel to be released.
Following the triumph of “Lilo & Stitch”, Disney introduced a television show titled “Lilo & Stitch: The Series”. This series initially debuted with the premiere of a standalone film, “Stitch: The Movie”, which hit screens in 2003 and paved the way for the subsequent series, which was broadcast on Disney Channel. It wasn’t until two years after that “Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch” was unveiled.
Despite being published afterwards, “Stitch Has a Glitch” serves as the sequel to “Lilo & Stitch,” as its storyline unfolds before “Stitch: The Movie” and “Lilo & Stitch: The Series.” These latter productions center around other experiments being unleashed in Hawaii.
What Is Lilo & Stitch 2 About?
In contrast to the confusion introduced by Jumba’s additional alien experiments in both “Stitch: The Movie” and “Lilo & Stitch: The Series”, “Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch” instead concentrates on the core family at the heart of the franchise.
Following the conclusion of the first film, Stitch settles into life in Hawaii alongside Lilo, Nani, Jumba, and Pleakley, who now reside on Earth permanently. Despite a generally smooth transition, Stitch starts experiencing disturbing dreams about his past self reemerging, causing harm to Lilo. These dreams are not entirely baseless, as it transpires that Jumba didn’t fully complete the work he intended when creating Stitch, and the alien begins exhibiting intermittent malfunctions, transforming into a monster momentarily. The narrative primarily revolves around Lilo, Jumba, and their companions as they race against time to rectify Stitch before it’s too late.
In the American series, Lilo & Stitch 2 stands out as it’s the only film where Daveigh Chase, who usually plays Lilo, is not in the lead role. Since she was occupied with voice recording for Lilo & Stitch: The Series, the part for this sequel was instead given to Dakota Fanning, a friend and fellow actor of Chase.
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly why the sequel film “Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch” is seeing a resurgence on Disney+ recently, but the upcoming live-action movie remake might be contributing to its surge in popularity. Fans who want to catch up on the entire Lilo & Stitch series before Disney’s new take premieres in May have plenty of time to stream all available titles currently online.
Currently, there are four Lilo & Stitch films accessible for streaming on Disney+. These consist of the ones previously discussed in this article, as well as the 2006 film titled “Leroy & Stitch,” and the TV series, Lilo & Stitch: The Series.
