The book “Avatar Legends: City of Echoes“, penned by Judy I. Lin for Abrams Books, presents a fresh tale in the universe of “Avatar: The Last Airbender“. This story focuses on Jin, who was previously featured in the “The Tales of Ba Sing Se” episode from Season 2. You may remember her as the girl who had a brief date with Zuko before he abruptly vanished after feeling embarrassed. Despite her limited screen time, it’s now clear that she holds a significant role within the franchise. This is the inaugural release in a line of new “Avatar Legends” stories delving into lesser-known characters. The book hits shelves on July 22nd.
This tale, titled Avatar Legends: City of Echoes, gradually unfolds, revealing itself as such. “Within these walls, there’s no war,” the citizens of Ba Sing Se are led to believe. However, Jin, a refugee whose parents were slain by the Fire Nation, knows better. Haunted by her past, she tries to maintain a low profile in the Lower Ring, caring for her ailing grandfather and juggling school with survival. Her only source of joy is Susu, her best friend, whose family accepts Jin as one of their own, and whose bakery she assists in making deliveries.
The story progresses as follows: “Susu’s world crumbles when her father loses their bakery through gambling. To clear the family debt, Susu is compelled to accept a contract in the Upper Ring. Jin swears to aid her friend under any circumstances. As a result of this pledge, Jin encounters Xuan, a haughty young man from the Middle Ring who has connections with the Silver Fangs, a prominent figure in the city’s illegal market. The more Jin becomes entangled in her dual existence, the more she uncovers Susu’s involvement in a conspiracy that proves to be far more sinister and perilous than initially thought.
Ultimately, the hint in the narrative foreshadows the challenges that Jin will face in the spinoff as rumors circulate about an Avatar living within the fortifications. The Fire Nation is advancing, putting Ba Sing Se on the edge of uprising. In order to resist the powerful entities governing her city and gamble everything for a friend she’s resolved to rescue, Jin must take action.
