Over two decades ago, on October 20th, 1999, I first witnessed the debut of One Piece, accompanied by the unforgettable opening theme “We Are!” by Hiroshi Kitadani. This tune and the distinctive voice behind it have endured the test of time, becoming inseparable from the series, often summoning a wave of nostalgia with just its motif. Many fans eagerly anticipate the potential return of both One Piece‘s most iconic opening theme and its first ending theme, “Memories” by Maki Otsuki, in the finale of this epic journey that’s spanned a decade.
It’s worth noting that Hiroshi Kitadani, who is a well-known fan and theorist on X (@newworldartur), has confessed to having a dream similar to yours – singing the final opening theme for One Piece. In a recent conversation, he expressed this desire, and fans are thrilled by the prospect.

Hiroshi Kitadani Wants to Perform One Piece‘s Final Opening
Despite already having over 1000 chapters under its belt, it seems that the storyline of “One Piece” is far from wrapping up, suggesting a possible prolonged wait for the last episode. However, considering Hiroshi Kitadani’s history of producing exceptional “One Piece” openings, there’s a strong possibility he might get to bring our shared aspirations to life by composing and performing the series’ final opening theme song.
Apart from the famous initial version, “We Are!”, that has been refined and re-performed numerous times, Hiroshi Kitadani is also renowned for singing the post-time skip opening, “We Go!”. This number retained the essence of “We Are!” with similar themes and Kitadani’s distinct jazzy J-pop style infused with ska undertones. After a long hiatus, Kitadani made a comeback to create another resounding success during the Wano Arc with “Over the Top”, whose electrifying opening is hard to forget. Notably, his latest and perhaps most significant hit was “ASSU!”, the theme song for the Egghead Arc. Interestingly, this piece was selected at the last minute, replacing Mori Calliope’s “Future Island”.
Despite the uncertainty about when One Piece might conclude, it’s certain that Hiroshi Kitadani will be in fine form to perform the opening song when the time arrives. With a music career spanning more than three decades since his debut in 1994, Kitadani’s voice remains as sharp and lively as ever, making it seem like he hasn’t aged at all. For now, fans can only cross their fingers that Toei Animation will grant him the opportunity to fulfill his dream of singing the final opening theme for One Piece.
