Renowned for his distinctive monsters in cinema, iconic director Guillermo del Toro’s Netflix miniseries titled Cabinet of Curiosities continues to intrigue us even today. Drawing inspiration from Rod Serling’s Night Gallery, each episode begins with a personal introduction by del Toro, with a different director helming each one. The series, comprising eight episodes, blends horror, folklore, and the supernatural. Each episode delves into a unique horror, with some monstrosities being terrifyingly nightmarish, while others are pitifully misconstrued. This anthology features stories carefully chosen by del Toro, each one certain to linger in your thoughts long after viewing. The series also boasts an impressive cast, as each story comes alive through different actors such as Tim Blake Nelson, Julian Richings, Ben Barnes, Rupert Grint, Sofia Boutella, Andrew Lincoln, and numerous others.
In some instances, terrifying beings are shown on-screen, while others linger ominously in the dark recesses. Creatures such as the carrion-feeding rats from “Graveyard Rats” and the intellect-bending horrors of “Pickman’s Model” form part of this series’ exploration into both the supernatural and psychological realms of fear. We delve deeper into each creature featured, even those that might have slipped past your notice.
7) “The Murmuring”
In the final episode of the series, the horror isn’t just about supernatural occurrences; it delves deeply into emotional turmoil. The story focuses on a couple, Nancy (Essie Davis) and Edgar (Andrew Lincoln), who are ornithologists studying bird murmuration. After tragically losing their daughter, they decide to move to a remote countryside for new research. As they settle in and start their work, Nancy begins experiencing strange whispers and ghostly encounters within the house.
In this episode, it’s unusual that the supernatural entities aren’t portrayed as wicked, but rather they seem to be attempting to convey a message to Nancy. Although we witness chilling apparitions and eerie visuals of haunting, the narrative predominantly revolves around the sorrow felt by both the living and the deceased. The story unfolds to reveal that these spirits have undergone a tragedy mirroring Nancy’s loss, causing the boundary between the living and the dead to become indistinct. This episode isn’t about creating fear, but rather it delves into the heavy burden of grief and the struggle to move on. By the conclusion of the episode, we observe that Nancy is prepared to open up about her sorrow with her spouse.
6) “The Outside“
In this episode, we meet Stacey (Kate Micucci), a woman who’s self-conscious about her appearance and yearns for acceptance, much like her colleagues. She is introduced to a skincare product named Alo Glo, but at first, it causes a rash on her skin. This rash only adds to her misery and insecurity. Remarkably, the creator of the skincare communicates with Stacey via her television, persuading her to purchase more of the product. Before long, the lotion starts seeping out from the bottles and envelopes her entirely, covering her body thoroughly.
After the metamorphosis, Stacey discards her previous, scaly skin to unveil an entirely fresh, immaculate physique. Upon returning to work, her attractive coworkers embrace her into their circle of friends, marking the realization of her long-held aspiration. Yet, they are oblivious to the fact that in a state of madness, she has taken her husband’s life and preserved his corpse. Despite the absence of any supernatural entities in this installment, it leaves a chilling impact. Transitioning from a blissful marital union, Stacey finds herself succumbing to chaos as she yearns for acceptance, eventually sacrificing her only source of joy.
5) “Pickman’s Model“
In one of the standout episodes from the series, we witness a budding friendship between Will (Ben Barnes), a student, and Richard (Crispin Glover), an artist whose chilling and eerie works captivate him. Over time, we find ourselves watching as Will transforms into a museum creator while Richard ascends to success in the art world. A reunion later in life finds Will grappling with the unsettling imagery of his friend’s paintings even as he remains spellbound by them. Richard’s artwork portrays genuinely horrific scenes, including coven members feasting on flesh with twisted expressions, and contorted demons devouring each other.
The startling discovery compels Will to confront the grim truth about his intense preoccupation with Richard’s artwork. As the artworks seem to gain consciousness, Will is forced to face the disturbing repercussions of his fascination. At some point, one of the terrifying creatures in his art comes alive, suggesting that other similarly horrifying drawings could manifest as well. However, the horror doesn’t stop there for Will, because Richard’s paintings make it hard to distinguish reality from nightmare. In the end, Richard’s last victims turn out to be Will’s spouse and child.
4) “The Viewing“
In one of the most peculiar episodes in the series, we find ourselves watching as a select few are summoned by a wealthy eccentric to his residence for an extraordinary demonstration, supposedly designed to broaden their minds. The episode is shrouded in secrecy, leaving us guessing about the mysterious artifact they’re expected to observe. The guests are coaxed into ingesting a concoction of mind-altering substances before being escorted into a chamber where they bear witness to a meteor shower. The hallucinogenic effects of the drugs intensify the eerie, terrifying experience.
In the beginning, Lionel’s home, boasting a futuristic design and brimming with technology, turns into a living nightmare when a meteor strikes and splits apart, unleashing a grotesque creature without skin and bearing two horns on its back. The scene becomes gruesome as some of the inhabitants are horrifically melted alive. Amidst the chaos, two guests manage to flee, but the entity, possessing otherworldly power, is set free into the city and vanishes into the unknown. As it disappears, leaving nothing but questions about its origin and capabilities, it casts a shadow of fear over the audience, pondering what might happen next.
3) “Lot 36“
In the initial installment of the series, titled “Lot 36”, we encounter Tim Blake Nelson portraying Nick, a seasoned veteran who purchases an abandoned storage locker from an elderly man. Initially, it appears that Nick is hostile and intolerant, particularly when he encounters Amelia, a Mexican immigrant seeking her family’s belongings from the lot inadvertently sold to Nick. Despite her pleas and persistence, Nick remains unyielding due to his prejudiced views. However, his actions come back to haunt him when he breaches a seal within the storage locker, releasing a malevolent spirit.
Despite witnessing a demon ensnared, Nick’s insatiable greed didn’t waver, leading him to jeopardize his life for a small amount of money. Now dealing with the repercussions, Nick finds himself pursued by the revived grotesque demon, whose slimy and undulating form is a sight to behold. This creature isn’t mindless; it perceives and responds to its quarry – in this instance, Nick. It stalks and chases him, showing no mercy and hungering for his soul. As he frantically runs through the dimly lit storage unit, Nick gets trapped inside a locker. On the other side of the door now stands Amelia, whom he implores to free. However, she refuses, leaving Nick to face his destiny as he is gruesomely consumed by the demon.
2) “The Autopsy“
The Autopsy episode stands out as one of the most haunting installments in the series due to its non-supernatural, yet terrifying extraterrestrial theme. The creature in question is a parasite, specifically, and it’s Dr. Carl Winters (F. Murray Abraham) who must prevent its spread among humans. Once a human becomes infected, their senses are intensified to an extreme degree while they remain conscious during the parasite’s internal consumption. As Sheriff Nate Craven (Glynn Turman) finds himself in dire straits, he seeks help from his friend and together they work on solving the case. The performance by Luke Roberts as the alien and Abraham is truly remarkable.
The tension builds as Dr. Winters realizes he may have to make the ultimate sacrifice to prevent the parasite from escaping. Although there’s some gore, this episode relies mainly on the actors’ performances to send chills down our spines. The slow-burn interaction between the characters really emphasizes the desperation and despair in the air. With a gripping blend of body horror and psychological dread, The Autopsy leaves a lasting impression long after the credits roll.
1) “Graveyard Rats“
Graveyard Rats”
In this chilling tale, we encounter two monstrous entities: colossal carrion-eating rats and an unquenchably greedy grave digger. The character of Masson, played by David Hewlett, is a desperate grave digger struggling with financial woes. His latest burglary endeavors have been thwarted by the rats that have been hiding in the graves, pilfering any riches belonging to the deceased. These enormous beasts are indeed a horrifying spectacle. They’re not only large enough to tear human flesh apart, but they’re also astonishingly swift and vicious. What sets them apart is their insatiable appetite, making them a menace to both the living and the dead.
As a movie enthusiast, I find myself drawn into the gripping tale of Masson, who bravely ventures beneath the surface in search of hidden treasures. However, my heart sinks as he encounters the queen rat, a monstrous creature that sends shivers down my spine. It dawns on me that these rodents don’t act independently; they have a sinister master controlling them. But Masson’s ordeal is far from over. Lost in the suffocating network of tunnels, he’s relentlessly pursued by these creatures. Just when I think there might be a glimmer of salvation, I realize it’s nothing more than an illusion, trapping Masson in a living nightmare that seems to have no end.
