After leaving PlayStation following a distinguished 30-year-long career, Shuhei Yoshida expressed his thoughts on Microsoft’s plan to bring their exclusive games to the PlayStation 5.
He chuckled and said, “I have a feeling that Microsoft is the largest game publisher on PlayStation. Given the size of the Xbox user base, it makes sense to me why they’re taking the actions they are.
Over the last few years, the sale of Xbox Series X|S hardware has noticeably decreased, and its recent large-scale purchases of prominent third-party game developers such as Bethesda and Activision have placed it in a predicament where it needs to find new income sources.
As a devoted admirer, I’ve noticed that Microsoft seems to be steering its attention towards Game Pass, which could very well be an extension of their company’s inherent nature. After all, they’re a software powerhouse and a pioneer in cloud technology. Consequently, their offerings like Office 365 are accessible across multiple platforms – Mac, mobile, Windows. It’s not too much of a stretch to imagine that they envision Game Pass following the same path, being available everywhere in the future.
It’s highly improbable that Sony will permit Game Pass on the PS5 in its present form because it would cut into their own subscription income and sales of third-party games. However, a more carefully selected version, like EA Play which only includes games published by Microsoft, might potentially be accepted by the Japanese company in the future.
In essence, Yoshida expressed that Microsoft’s move to offer their games on PS5 is beneficial for PlayStation owners. This means they will gain access to games that were previously unavailable to them.
