Spider-Man’s Disney Attraction Twist Just Changed MCU History!

Disney+’s “Spider-Man: Across Town” concluded its first season today, offering two thrilling episodes that pave the way for significant advancements in Peter Parker’s (played by Hudson Thames) journey. Although some plot lines remain unresolved, viewers can take comfort knowing that Marvel Studios has officially approved the series up to Season 3, ensuring a rich continuation of the thoughtfully woven storylines. Interestingly, the finale hints at impending perils for our neighborhood Spider-Man, while also subtly linking to Disney Parks’ lore by merging aspects from a well-liked Avengers Campus attraction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s established narrative.

WARNING: Spoilers below for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Season 1, Episode 10

In the final episode of the season, Norman Osborn (portrayed by Colman Domingo) shows his true nature as his internship program is exposed as a cover for creating harmful portal technology. This venture, influenced by Thor’s multidimensional journeys and the Chitauri invasion of New York, unexpectedly summons a dangerous symbiote to Earth, which Peter Parker and Doctor Strange (voiced by Robin Atkin Downes) must work together to control. The event sheds light on Osborn’s unscrupulous business tactics and his readiness to leverage young talent for financial gain, ultimately prompting Peter to cut all ties with Oscorp entirely.

In “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” Harry Osborn, voiced by Zeno Robinson and influenced by Nico Minoru (voiced by Grace Song), embarks on a new journey that diverges from his father’s path. He intends to create a novel enterprise aimed at assisting young scientists such as Asha (Erica Luttrell) and Jeanne Foucault (Anjali Kunapaneni). This company will uphold ethical principles, and Harry calls it the Worldwide Engineering Brigade, commonly known as W.E.B., which is a nod to an attraction at Disney’s Avengers Campus.

How W.E.B. Went From Theme Park Ride to MCU Canon

Back in June 2021, I had the thrill of encountering the Worldwide Engineering Brigade for the first time at Disney California Adventure’s Avengers Campus. This remarkable institution calls an impressive structure home, said to have once been Howard Stark’s flying car workshop. According to the storyline, after HYDRA’s assault on Hong Kong’s Stark Expo, Tony Stark founded W.E.B., with a mission to nurture fresh heroes and boost global safety. The headquarters is filled with delightful Easter eggs, such as lockers assigned to heroes like Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, and America Chavez. As the attraction creatively bends the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s narrative, it’s classified as non-canon.

In an innovative twist, the “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” series reinvented the storyline by making Harry Osborn, instead of Tony Stark, establish the organization. This version depicts an alternate reality where it’s Norman Osborn, rather than Stark, who initially guides Peter Parker. The series preserves significant aspects from the attraction’s lore, such as highlighting young innovators and the development of future superhero technology. It also reflects the ride’s focus on collaborative problem-solving, albeit with a more ominous undertone about corporate responsibility.

In addition to its background, W.E.B.’s presence in both comic books and television brings about distinctive chances for the blending of concepts. The wide array of young superheroes and scientists within the Disney Parks’ interpretation of W.E.B., such as Squirrel Girl and Moon Girl who have not been mentioned before, offer the show’s scriptwriters a rich source of existing relationships and situations to draw inspiration from for upcoming seasons, allowing them to build upon these connections while crafting their own distinctive Marvel universe spin-off.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Season 1 is now streaming on Disney+.

How significant do you believe W.E.B. might play out in Season 2 of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments section below!
