In January, we finally got an official look at Nintendo Switch 2, following years of speculation. However, the unveiling trailer didn’t provide many details, leaving fans curious about its price point. The cost has been a hot topic, with some guessing it could be as high as $450 or even $500. But one industry expert, Joost van Dreunen, predicts a more affordable figure of $399. He explained his rationale in the most recent SuperJoost Playlist newsletter (via NintendoLife).
In simpler terms, “Nintendo is planning to sell the Switch 2 at a lower price than premium gaming devices from competitors, but still higher than the original Switch’s initial cost. This strategy allows them to continue making a profit while also showcasing technical improvements without losing their family-oriented customer base.” (van Dreunen)
It’s essential to remember that these are just predictions, not informed by any inside information. However, given his expertise in the video game industry, van Dreunen’s guess seems well-informed as he is the co-founder of SuperData Research, a firm specializing in gaming research owned by Nielsen Media Research. Moreover, his reasoning appears solid. Nintendo’s prosperity is largely due to the appeal of its products to families, and it’s likely that they will endeavor to ensure that the Nintendo Switch 2 isn’t excessively costly.
A significant factor that makes $399 seem reasonable is the understanding that pricing it at $499 would put it side by side with PS5 and Xbox Series X in terms of cost. Comparing the system’s graphics, processing power, and game library becomes inevitable when they are priced equally. By offering Switch 2 at a lower price than its competitors, Nintendo can control the expectations set for the product. Additionally, the Steam Deck, with its base model at $399, could appear to be a more attractive option if Nintendo were to price Switch 2 at $449 or $499.
In 2017, when Nintendo Switch first came out, it retailed at $299. If Nintendo decides to price the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 at about $100 more, that could be a strategic move for them. The increased price would still represent an upgrade in graphics and processing power without being too expensive for potential buyers. However, we’ll have to wait and see if Nintendo actually follows through with this, as there are ongoing concerns about possible tariffs between the U.S. and China. It’s hoped that official details will be shared soon, allowing fans to plan their savings accordingly. We expect to learn more in the spring, as a Nintendo Direct focusing on the new console is scheduled for April 2nd.
