Constantine 2: Is Keanu Reeves’ Sequel Finally Happening?

Keanu Reeves and director Francis Lawrence are stirring excitement about the possibility of another installment in the series following their 2005 movie Constantine, a film inspired by the comic book series Hellblazer, which features elements of the supernatural from DC Comics.

A well-known figure worldwide portrayed the character of John Constantine, a sorcerer dealing with exorcisms, in a film set in the fantasy genre with a dark atmosphere. This movie was released prior to the significant rise of comic book adaptations into films, which began in 2008 following the success of Iron Man and The Dark Knight.

Initially, Constantine was met with both critical and commercial failure upon its debut. However, as time passed, people began to appreciate it more due to its quirky B-movie appeal and departures from the original storyline, which eventually gained wider acceptance among audiences.

Following a short period of professional setbacks, Reeves has regained momentum and is currently enjoying a successful phase in his career due to the acclaimed John Wick series. This popular franchise appears to have revived the long-awaited Constantine sequel, scheduled for release in 2022.

However, could you update me on the current status of the project? This is the recent information that Reeves and Lawrence have shared regarding Constantine 2.

Will there be a Constantine 2?

According to director Francis Lawrence, Constantine 2 seems more imminent than ever, but as of now, it hasn’t been officially scheduled on Warner Bros’ forthcoming lineup.

In a recent conversation with Collider, the director (known for The Hunger Games series) expressed great enthusiasm, along with producer Akiva Goldsman and actor Keanu Reeves, about potentially working together again on the upcoming sequel. They are all thrilled at the possibility of reunion.

He playfully hinted, “We’ve come up with an intriguing concept! Over the years, we’ve delved into numerous comic books and noticed various elements – it’s safe to say that we’re drawing inspiration from some of those aspects.

Actually, a large part of it stems from the three of us harboring affection for the character, being captivated by the world, and subconsciously nurturing concepts for around two decades. Over this period, our minds have been simmering with tales, characters, and ideas that we cherish, as well as innovative stories we admire.

The remarks imply that a hypothetical Constantine 2 might not prioritize adhering strictly to the source material from the comics, similar to how the original movie did.

In September 2022, discussions about a sequel intensified, yet fans were worried that significant changes at DC Studios might halt the ongoing progress. This transformation involved rebranding the franchise under new management, including writer-director James Gunn.

Back in March 2023, I personally got wind from a Reddit post by Keanu Reeves himself that he had a chat with James Gunn about the prospect of Constantine 2. The buzz around town is that this potential sequel might not align with Gunn’s budding cinematic universe, which is set to debut this summer with Superman.

In February 2025, during a special episode marking the film’s 20-year anniversary, Lawrence and Reeves graced the Happy Sad Confused podcast with their presence, bringing along an exciting piece of news.

Lawrence disclosed that we’ve reached a point where we’re authorized to proceed on that path. Moreover, Akiva is drafting, and together with Keanu and Akiva, we’ve been brainstorming. I believe we have some truly fantastic concepts up our sleeves.

When could a potential Constantine 2 be released?

The release date for Constantine 2 has not been set as of now, but there’s a chance that DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn might want to kickstart his reboot before resuming work on the original project.

This summer, the studio is set to release a new take on Superman from director Gunn, featuring David Corenswet. Moreover, the Supergirl spin-off titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” will extend the series’ universe in June 2026.

In 2027, stories set outside of Gunn’s continuity under the DC Elseworlds banner will once again take center stage, with a follow-up to Robert Pattinson and Matt Reeves’s Batman movie in the works. This could be an opportune moment to plan for Constantine’s return as well.

At the moment, we can only guess about the release date for Constantine 2. As news emerges, we’ll be sure to share it with you promptly.

What has Keanu Reeves said about a potential Constantine 2?

Keanu Reeves expresses great eagerness to once again portray John Constantine, sharing during a conversation on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he’s been longing to bring this character to life.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’ve been thrilled to hear Keanu Reeves mention his potential return for “Constantine 2” not just once, but twice on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. It’s thanks to this comedian and host that the spotlight has been shining brightly on my cherished project.

In July 2024, Reeves expressed gratitude, saying, “Your program made an impact. I was wonderfully ‘Colberted.’ It sparked discussions, turning a ‘no’ into a possible ‘yes,’ and eventually a ‘yes’ of sorts.

“Right now, [we’re] waiting on a script. But if it happens, you’re in.”
