After a lengthy hiatus, I couldn’t be happier that Kieron Gillen and Caspar Wijngaard’s acclaimed Image Comics series, The Power Fantasy, has finally released its sixth issue. This timely release serves as an escapist haven amidst the gloominess of our current world situation (praising the comic, criticizing the state of things).
The commencement of a new arc in this series offers two significant advantages: it welcomes readers back into its distinctive universe after a short absence, while simultaneously propelling the narrative forward. Given the unconventional exploration of “superpowers” in the first five issues, the latest installment of The Power Fantasy continues to demonstrate that there’s simply no other comic quite like it on store shelves.
Following the dramatic twist from issue #5, Jacky Magus has successfully infiltrated the U.S. Government, assuming the position of “Secretary of Magic.” This unconventional move, with a department that didn’t previously exist, is quite unprecedented and bears little resemblance to recent headlines. Consequently, other characters are left grappling with their new positions, mirroring the ongoing power struggle that has been a hallmark of this series and its complex, lethal protagonists.
Gillen skillfully balances reacquainting us with the story’s world while maintaining a fast-paced and intriguing narrative. Surprises are plentiful as significant character developments unfold, impacting not just this current plotline but future ones as well (Gillen hints that the series could span up to 50 issues if all goes smoothly). Characters such as Etienne and Val have always been captivating pieces of the puzzle, but Magus’ new role introduces a fresh layer for Gillen to delve into creatively. This installment also shines a light on Heavy and Tonya, the Atomic who initiated the story in issue 1. Despite the mounting mysteries, Gillen skillfully keeps readers hooked, particularly through Eliza, the demonic Atomic, hinting at more revelations to come.
A distinctive feature of “The Power Fantasy” has been consistent since its debut, and continues here, with Caspar Wijngaard’s artwork creating a particular atmosphere in each panel. Regardless of whether the page involves three characters who are not even on the same planet, Wijngaard skillfully ensures that the color halo around each character contributes to the overall emotional rhythm of their current situation and what they are attempting to express. This is true even for characters conversing in the same room, presenting a unique style that often challenges traditional comic book art, but ultimately enriches the reading experience.
In simpler terms, The Power Fantasy’s visual storytelling is commendable as it consistently provides a clear understanding of the setting and characters’ mental states. For instance, one page might portray a disjointed scene to depict a character’s psychological condition, while the next could present multiple extended panels showcasing various landscapes and locations, adding to the suspense of where characters are located. Essentially, the experience lies in the anticipation of what each page turn will reveal, and Wijngaard’s artwork keeps up with this high standard by offering intricate details throughout.
As a devoted fan myself, I’d advise newcomers not to jump straight into “The Power Fantasy #6” without proper preparation. This issue delves deeply into five significant themes, each richly layered with context and insight that can be quite enchanting. It’s as if the storytelling gently guides you back into this captivating world. What makes this series truly exceptional are its consistent excellence in delivering a complex, nuanced narrative that elevates superhero comics to unprecedented heights. While many major publishers are experiencing success with their character reboots currently, none quite measure up to the impact of “The Power Fantasy”.
