Riot Games is the Type of Company That Should Develop an MMORPG – Co-Founder

It’s common knowledge that Riot Games, developers of League of Legends and Valorant, have been working on an MMORPG set in the world they created for their MOBA. However, the studio has been quite tight-lipped about the game’s progress. In a conversation with Stephen Totilo from Game File, Riot Games’ chief product officer and co-founder, Marc Merrill, shared that development is ongoing and going smoothly.

Merrill affirmed that indeed, an MMORPG remains a valuable pursuit for Riot,” he said. “In fact, it’s the one I devote the greatest amount of my personal time to.

Merrill continued the discussion, focusing on the challenges in creating an MMORPG, given that the market is mainly controlled by giants like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy 14. He believes Riot Games is the ideal company to tackle such a formidable task.

As a gamer, I firmly believe that Riot Games is just the right fit to seize such opportunities. After all, if we’re aiming to enhance the gaming experience, they’re the ones who can do it best. The universe of Runeterra, as depicted in the various spin-offs of League of Legends and the smashing hit Netflix series Arcane, continues to captivate fans like me.

In 2021, Riot Games announced they were hiring more developers for their MMORPG, but since then, there’s been no further news about this project from the company.

Currently, Riot Games is gearing up to debut its fighting game set within the Runeterra universe, known as 2XKO. This game will be freely accessible on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S platforms. Characters such as Jinx, Braum, and Illaoi are among those featured in the roster for this fighting game, with many more to follow.
