The Worst Product

I was taken aback when I learned that HP is planning to scoop up key assets from Humane Inc., including a significant portion of their workforce, their CosmOS software platform, and the rights to their intellectual properties, all for a cool $116 million! (As reported by Bloomberg.)

Humane Incorporated gained recognition due to the unveiling of their wearable AI device, Ai Pin, towards the end of 2023. However, this specific product wasn’t included in HP’s acquisition agreement. The hesitance on HP’s part to proceed with that aspect of their business might be related to the negative feedback received following Ai Pin’s less-than-impressive debut launch.

Prior to its release, there was immense excitement and speculation about the AI Pin, with some even predicting that it could overtake smartphones. Yet, due to its high initial cost of $700 and additional $24 monthly subscription fee, Humane Inc. found it challenging to justify their product’s value.

Humane Inc., led by its co-founders Bongiorno and Chaudhri (formerly of Apple), will now be part of HP’s AI innovation hub. This new division within HP is geared towards creating a smart environment encompassing all HP products and services, aimed at shaping the future work landscape.

What does HP’s acquisition mean for Humane’s Ai Pin device?

Starting February 28, 2025, Ai Pins will no longer have access to Humane’s servers, which means users won’t be able to use the AI features for calls, texts, data usage, and AI queries or responses. But don’t worry, the battery function will still work.

Will I get a refund for my Humane Ai Pin?

As an analyst, I find it concerning that the projected cost of $700 appears significant, considering the loss of nearly all functionalities for our AI-powered device starting from February 28, 2025.

As a tech enthusiast, I’ve got some important news for those who recently purchased Humane Inc.’s Ai Pin within the past 90 days. If you fall into this category, you’re in luck! The company has announced that they will be refunding these purchases. However, if, like me, you bought the device before November 15, 2024, I’m sorry to say that you won’t be eligible for a refund under this policy.

If you fit into this group, we will complete your refund by February 27, 2025. Additionally, you’ll be given a partial refund for any remaining days of the $24 monthly subscription beyond February 28.

Humane’s Ai Pins failed to meet user expectations

As a tech-obsessed enthusiast, I’ve got to say that the Humane’s AI Pin, a product I’d previously looked forward to, has left me utterly disappointed after Marques Brownlee labeled it as his worst reviewed product ever. Ever since its release, this device has been plagued with significant problems, most notably the charging case’s propensity to catch fire. This issue was so severe that Humane had to recall the AI Pin in June 2024. Quite a letdown!

It’s worth noting that some users are yet to receive new charging cases. Originally, they were due for replacement, but HP’s upcoming acquisition has caused this process to be delayed. Instead, these users will get a refund for their charging cases, which corresponds to a small portion of the original cost, effectively reducing the price of the charging case.

According to reports, Humane Inc. attempted to sell their company for a staggering $1 billion, but ultimately settled for a sale price that was only around 10% of the original asking amount. This significant reduction in value seems to have been triggered by complaints about poor user experience, leading to a higher number of returns rather than sales.
