In its second weekend, it’s expected that “Captain America: Brave New World” will continue to lead at the box office. However, there is an estimation of a notable decrease in ticket sales. As reported by Deadline, this Marvel hit could earn approximately $30 million domestically this weekend, which is a significant drop from its initial $100 million haul over the four-day Presidents’ Day weekend. This projected earnings are similar to “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”‘s second weekend gross of $31.9 million. In 2023, “Ant-Man 3” opened with a whopping $120.3 million during the Presidents’ Day window.
Over the weekend, the highly anticipated Stephen King adaptation titled “The Monkey” is expected to make a powerful debut. Predictions suggest that this horror movie could rake in approximately $17 million within its first three days in the U.S., surpassing its production budget of around $10-11 million.
As a devoted fan, I’d say that “Captain America: Brave New World” was widely anticipated to lead the pack in box office earnings for this year. However, when it comes to forecasted commercial success against other Marvel productions, it didn’t quite measure up. The film managed to earn approximately $12 million from its Thursday night previews on February 13, which is a tad lower than “Ant-Man 3″‘s opening night gross of $17.5 million.
The word of mouth wasn’t kind to Brave New World. Before its release, the movie received mixed opinions; its 49% rating on Rotten Tomatoes is among the lowest in Marvel Cinematic Universe history. Brave New World didn’t impress many viewers either, receiving a CinemaScore of B- – the poorest for any MCU film. Despite some enjoyable performances by Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford, the storyline was problematic for many as it tried to balance multiple plotlines and function as both an engaging political thriller.
Just like many big-budget films, Marvel productions usually experience a front-loaded release pattern. This means they earn substantial revenues during the opening weekend, followed by a decline. With each new blockbuster launch, die-hard fans flock to the theaters, but as hype subsides, so does interest. The studios behind these movies typically anticipate stronger ticket sales holding over time than what’s expected for “Brave New World.”
In essence, “Brave New World” is projected to generate $100 million over a four-day opening weekend and then around $30 million over the following three days – a sizable drop that suggests the film hasn’t sparked much excitement among viewers. There’s no direct competition for its target audience in the coming weeks, and it appears “Brave New World” may not enjoy a lengthy run at the box office. The silver lining is that the movie cost only $180 million to produce, so it should still turn a profit.
2025 marks a crucial year for the MCU, and it seems that it didn’t get off to the best start they had hoped. The upcoming movies like ‘Thunderbolts’ and ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’, set to release during summer, will be intriguing to watch as they unfold. Particularly, ‘The Fantastic Four’ has sparked interest among viewers, with its teaser trailer garnering over 200 million views within the first day. Fingers crossed that these movies are successful hits, mirroring Marvel’s past triumphs and paving the way for a grand finale in the Multiverse Saga. Apart from ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, Marvel has been facing some challenges recently, and it’s high time they get back on track.
