The Mafia Nanny Season 3: What’s in Store?

I’ve been captivated myself by the spellbinding tale that goes by the title “The Mafia Nanny“, ever since it was unveiled on Webtoon back in 2023. Over the last two years, it has left fans enchanted with its engaging cast of characters and heart-pounding mafia romance, amassing an impressive 158 million views and boasting a staggering 3.6 million subscribers to date. Now, after wrapping up two successful seasons, “The Mafia Nanny” is poised for even greater heights as it embarks on a new chapter of success with its first-ever print release by Webtoon Unscrolled, available on shelves from February 4th, 2025.

Recently, ComicBook was granted an exclusive interview with Violet Matter, the author of “The Mafia Nanny,” thanks to Webtoon. We discussed the release of the printed version of “The Mafia Nanny Volume 1,” the motivations behind the beloved characters in the series, and even hinted at what fans can anticipate in the upcoming season.

For the First Time: How does it feel to see your creation reach a whole new group of readers beyond those on Webtoon, including fans who might start collecting ‘The Mafia Nanny’ in print format?

Violet Matter: It’s quite unreal! Webtoon Unscrolled has done an incredible job with the printed version. Lately, I’ve been traveling abroad a lot. My followers are aware of my nomadic ways. However, everyone has sent me pictures of the book they’ve encountered in various places – be it bookstores or big-box stores. It’s heartwarming to see that the project we all labored over is now found in real bookstores, and it could potentially catch the eye of someone who doesn’t even read webcomics.

I’m eagerly anticipating my return to the U.S. to witness it firsthand myself, and I hope this work serves as an introduction to webcomics for those who are new to the genre. With so many excellent titles on Webtoon, it’s exciting that they now have the opportunity to discover these hidden gems among the general public.

Discussing your past creative endeavors, I noticed that you’ve also dabbled in fanfiction writing. In what ways has this background influenced your creative process and storytelling within “The Mafia Nanny”?

Absolutely! My introduction to fanfiction provided valuable insights into writing for diverse audiences. Unlike when composing a book, where the work remains private until completion, serials like fanfiction and webcomics offer an ongoing connection with the readers. This real-time interaction can be both beneficial and challenging since it allows us to gauge the audience’s reactions as the story unfolds. If something doesn’t resonate or seems unclear, the readers might take it in a direction we didn’t anticipate. However, this feedback is crucial because it helps ensure that the audience remains engaged and satisfied with the narrative, much like passengers on a ship who need to feel comfortable as we steer through the waters together.

However, it’s also advantageous because it allows us, as both writers and artists, to delve deeper into or highlight characters we hadn’t anticipated would resonate with readers, such as Adam for example, who was initially a minor character. His Formula 1 background was merely hinted at in the beginning, but due to reader demand, we developed a mini-arc focusing on that aspect of him. Therefore, I believe serials are unique because they enable us to ensure everyone’s satisfaction and make adjustments as needed while also adding improvisations. This process is akin to what I learned while writing fanfiction.

If so, can fans maybe expect to see more of Valentine and Nico in the upcoming seasons?

Absolutely, now that we’ve been given the green light for a new season, we can explore some of the lesser-known characters and storylines more extensively. These elements were not heavily emphasized in our initial plan due to potential limitations in the number of seasons. It’s truly thrilling to have the opportunity to broaden the scope of our world and continuously enrich it.

Discussing the key characters, especially Davina, she’s quite assertive. Did any specific ideas influence her character development?

In this comic series, Davina’s character was essentially molded based on where I envisioned the storyline should progress. Typically, when I write, I develop characters first, but for this series, I began with an ending in mind. I knew exactly where I wanted the entire plot to culminate, and I realized that Davina had to be a specific kind of woman to reach that conclusion. She’s intelligent, empathetic, courageous, has something to prove, and is proficient in computers because I believe future heroes will have blue-light filtering lenses due to the increasing interconnectedness of the world. This way, Davina could realistically navigate the cutting edge of the criminal underworld, given that a lot of crime now takes place online.

I developed her character by working backwards from the overall narrative arc of the story, which might seem a bit unusual. However, many of her everyday actions with Mikey, like baking cookies or going to the zoo, are actually inspired by my experiences as a nanny in London. This helps keep her character relatable and grounded amidst the more extraordinary elements of the story. Essentially, I aimed to blend the ordinary life of a nanny with the exciting world of an operative when writing each episode.

As a passionate fan, I must say that what truly captivates me about this series is the perfect blend of intense mafia drama and light-hearted, everyday moments – especially those featuring the charismatic protagonist, Mikey. Sometimes, he even steals the show! When crafting Mikey’s character, what inspired you, and were there any specific aspects or qualities that you aimed to emphasize?

This rephrased version maintains the original sentiment while using a first-person perspective as an enthusiast and making it more conversational.

As a passionate storyteller, I’ve been blessed with six younger siblings, four of whom entered the world during my high school years. This unexpected timing had a profound impact on my writing, as “Mikey” often reflected the peculiar insights and unique perspectives that only my little brothers and sisters could provide. Their boundless curiosity and wisdom, often beyond their years, continuously amazed me. I believe children are far more insightful than we sometimes acknowledge, and they perceive things we’d rather they didn’t. With this in mind, I aimed to capture the intense focus that kids possess and channel it into illuminating the hidden issues within the family Davina would eventually help mend.

Drawing some influence from Marvin.W’s comic, “Humor Me”, I’ve incorporated aspects of it along with musicals like “Annie” and “Matilda”. These stories resonate with me because they feature kids standing up to adults, which is something I appreciate given our adult-centric society that often nurtures children to act otherwise. However, in a surprising twist, I became a mom this year myself! And while my baby might be causing some chaos at home, he certainly makes for an intriguing character in my work.

It’s clear why Gabriel is so captivated by him, and when they spend time together at the park feeding ducks, he transforms entirely. As for Gabriel himself, he’s not only good-looking but also intricate, with his character unfolding gradually from halfway through Season 1 and continuing throughout Season 2. Now, as we approach Season 3, where Davina is trying to uncover secrets, what direction will Gabriel’s character take on?

Absolutely, crafting Gabriel is quite enjoyable as I begin with a somewhat exaggerated character stereotype typical of the mafia genre. However, as the story unfolds, I gradually chip away at his tough exterior, revealing tiny fissures. It’s as if I’m sculpting him, slowly deconstructing and understanding his complexities. Initially, he exudes an unapproachable air of extreme intensity, defensiveness, and charm. Yet, as the story progresses, we discover his soft spots: his undying devotion to his son, his fondness for pistachio ice cream, and his admiration for capable, intelligent women. He transforms from a seemingly invincible figure into a character with vulnerabilities and endearing quirks.

In essence, Gabriel’s character development revolves around him rising to Davina’s standards, which initially appeared to be reversed. Initially, it seemed like Davina would strive to impress him, but the dynamic shifts, with Gabriel needing to transform to become deserving of her respect. This change comes as she continually pushes him to improve, both as a father and subsequently, as a man. Consequently, there seems to be a significant burden on Gabriel in the upcoming season, as he has quite a journey ahead of him to reach those standards.

Specifically, when it comes to romantic matters, Adam is learning to be more skillful under guidance, much like Cupid learning to master his craft.

He needs all the help he can get.

Does he indeed carry out the actions? Can you provide more insights, readers, about what we might encounter in Season 3?

Abundance of events is expected in Season 3, yet I’m uncertain if it’s the type of action audiences are anticipating. There will most likely be romantic elements as well, though it may develop gradually. Essentially, Davina’s strategy for Season 3 revolves around her Phase One, which involved identifying all potential threats, followed by Phase Two – dealing with these threats at every opportunity. This has been the focus throughout Seasons 2 and 3. She’s capable of managing the Bratva, Galecians, mob, don, and everyone else, but whether she can handle Gabriel becoming serious is yet to be determined.

As an avid content creator, I’m thrilled to be part of the vibrant community on Webtoon. Are there any Webtoon series that truly captivate or motivate you, fellow creators, which you regularly follow and admire?

Currently, I’m deeply immersed in a charming romantic phase, so I devoured “Eaternal Nocturnal” over the holidays, and its art style was absolutely captivating. Now, I’m engrossed in “Love 4 a Walk,” which strikes an emotional chord, and “A Spell for a Smith.” I recently started this one, and it’s warm, adorable, and makes you yearn for a garden and a pet cat. In essence, it’s a romantic tale, and the characters are deeply smitten with each other—I can’t get enough of it! It seems that my next writing project will undoubtedly involve a gentler love story.

For those who prefer a hardcopy of The Mafia Nanny, what additional items or special features can they expect to find within the book, such as extras, illustrations, or bonuses?

In this initial book, readers can anticipate the familiar and cherished story they’ve grown to love. Some minor adjustments were made to improve the print version, but it generally adheres to the online version. For future volumes, we might include additional artwork or extras, though I need to consult with our artists first to brainstorm ideas.
