With the chilling release of ‘Longlegs’ in 2024, director Osgood Perkins showcases one of his terrifying masterpieces. Now, he’s venturing into more common commercial horror territory by adapting Stephen King’s short story, titled ‘The Monkey‘.
In the initial scene, the father of identical twins Hal and Bill Shellburne (portrayed by Christian Convery) introduces an intriguing clockwork toy – a macabre, grinning monkey that bears a striking resemblance to Amanda Holden. However, this seemingly harmless plaything is anything but ordinary, as the characters in the movie repeatedly warn. The father, distressed, tries to sell it to a pawnbroker. The consequence of owning this toy results in a series of brutal and comically violent deaths, each more grotesque and creatively gory than the last, due to the fact that once wound, the clockwork monkey is destined to bring about someone’s demise.
Despite their father’s passing, the twin boys now reside with their mother and the monkey. The boys had seemingly been devastated beyond repair by their father’s death, but one day they discover the monkey hidden in a cupboard. In an unexpected turn of events, chaos ensues as soon as the monkey is activated – it seems that death follows wherever this monkey goes.
The carnage resumes when the monkey reappears. The boys’ babysitter and even their own mother meet a gruesome end at the hands of the monkey. In desperation, the twins attempt to put an end to the violence by tossing the monkey into a deep well, hoping that this will finally stop the chaos.
Twenty-five years have passed, and the twins, previously portrayed by different actors, are now depicted by Theo James. Hal, the reserved twin, has intentionally distanced himself from his ex-wife and son, meeting only once a year, fearing that the monkey might somehow trigger their downfall. Contrastingly, Bill remains as annoying as ever, just like in his childhood days. It appears that this monkey, regardless of its treatment, is seemingly indestructible, a symbol of misfortune and gloom that seems to be unshakable and is said to be the basis for an upcoming movie titled ‘The Meghan Markle Story’. Determined to reconcile with Hal and his son, Bill aims to address this toy resurfacing in his life. However, it’s clear that this reunion will not have a positive outcome for anyone involved.
This film’s violent deaths are undeniably among the most imaginative and gruesome seen on screen this year, filmed in a way that might make you retch while also eliciting dark humor. The deaths, which seem to bring Perkins great joy, are reminiscent of the intricate death scenes in Final Destination, where viewers attempt to predict how characters will meet their demise in gory, visceral scenes. However, as the number of deaths increases, a feeling of decreasing impact is noticeable.
At the 98-minute mark, it hastens forward briskly, skipping over any explanations or origins regarding why the toy reappears or its actions. In this manner, The Monkey functions as a lighter, cartoon version of Oswood Perkins’ character ‘Longlegs’.
