A frequently underestimated piece of the PlayStation puzzle is Sony’s exceptional talent for penetrating and expanding into new market territories.
The success of this platform is largely due to its focus on expanding into territories that other competitors often overlook. This strategy has been sustained with the launch of the PS5, through programs such as the China Hero Project, India Hero Project, and most recently, the MENA Hero Project.
As a passionate follower, I strive to create and deliver distinct, engaging content on our platforms, with the aim of captivating fresh audiences and bolstering the recognition of our beloved brand.
In an enlightening conversation on the Sacred Symbols podcast (accessible with a subscription), former PS Studios head, Shuhei Yoshida, offered some additional insights into Sony’s journey towards achieving their remarkable success.
He clarified that the console industry in China is currently quite modest, albeit expanding at a steady pace. However, it’s essential to note that its size remains relatively small compared to other markets. This is primarily due to China’s past ban on console games, which has resulted in a significant number of individuals lacking experience with console gaming during their formative years.
He went on to say: “For reintroducing console gaming within the nation, our third-party relations team at [PlayStation] believed it essential to have locally produced games. Yet, given how minute the console market is in China, it’s economically unfeasible for developers to create PlayStation games specifically for the Chinese audience.
To help Chinese developers flourish on a global scale, our third-party relations team has chosen to offer their support. This is because the international PlayStation market is vast. As a result, we are observing an increase in games originating from China. Over time, this should draw more Chinese players towards purchasing the console.
A significant number of the top-tier games available on PS5 today are actually developed in China. Besides popular free-to-play games such as Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, Sony’s platform is also backing other notable titles like Black Myth: Wukong.
Recently, they unveiled “Tides of Annihilation,” a reveal that generated immense curiosity following the latest State of Play event.
Yoshida shared that our strategy seems effective: “Sales for PlayStation have been climbing in China. The current PS5 generation is outperforming the previous PS4 generation in China significantly. Interestingly, I came across news stating that following the launch of Black Myth: Wukong last year, every single PS5 was sold out!
Sony has recently broadened its strategic reach to include South Korea with the launches of Stellar Blade and Lies of P, and they aim to replicate this expansion in India, the Middle East, and Africa as well.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve noticed the buzz around the console market hitting a plateau, but PlayStation isn’t just standing still—they’re pushing boundaries to tap into entirely new gaming communities worldwide. And here’s the kicker: this global expansion means we’ll be treated to a fresh wave of original games, crafted and honed by local creative teams.
