The highly expected Vision Pro AR glasses by Apple showed a lot of potential at their release, but unfortunately, they haven’t quite met the expectations set by the hype. For example, Apple priced it at a hefty $3,500, which discouraged many potential buyers due to its high cost, making it appear exclusive to higher-income markets.
As I stand by, I can’t help but notice the intricate augmented reality headset that’s been causing quite a stir. However, it seems to be riddled with a host of problems, some more serious than others. Health issues like eye strain and cognitive fatigue are concerning, while its bulky design is a significant letdown in terms of aesthetics. Additionally, the limited app support from developers leaves much to be desired, making the hefty $3,500 price tag less enticing beyond its initial allure.
Despite the initial excitement for the costly headset diminishing, budget-friendly and multifunctional options such as XREAL’s AR glasses are emerging. Yet, recent reports hint that Apple could potentially reenter the market with the Vision Pro by leveraging AI-powered capabilities (according to LaptopMag).
As reported by Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple is planning to incorporate its artificial intelligence (AI) into the Vision Pro, a new version designed specifically for guest users. Additionally, they are developing a spatial content application that could pique user curiosity and boost the sale of more headsets.
It’s said that the AR headset is expected to get significant upgrades through an upcoming version of its software, visionOS 2.4, possibly as soon as April. Yet, developers might be able to explore these new features this current week.
If accurate, it appears that Apple Intelligence may come equipped with various features for the Vision Pro, such as writing tools, customizable animojis (Genmojis), and the Image Playground application when it ships. However, Apple has not yet verified these details.
Will Apple Intelligence save the Vision Pro from flopping?
Apple had been cautious with generative AI up until October 2024, when they introduced their Apple Intelligence strategy. Notably, the full potential of Apple Intelligence hasn’t been realized just yet; it’s gradually being rolled out for iPhone 15 users and beyond, as well as Mac users with M1 chips and above.
Sales of Apple’s iPhone have seemed to drop off in recent years, particularly in China. It remains uncertain whether the launch of Apple Intelligence has significantly impacted those numbers overall. We’ll have to wait and observe if this strategy works well for the Vision Pro.
A few weeks ago, it was revealed that Microsoft is transferring the development of its military Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) technology, including hardware and software, to Anduril Industries. If the deal proceeds, Microsoft could assign this $22 billion project to the third-party developer.
In the previous year, Microsoft ceased development on their Windows Mixed Reality platform and discontinued the HoloLens 2.
