This year marks the 60th anniversary of the cherished 1960s show “Thunderbirds” – and to celebrate, a special edition Blu-ray collection featuring all 32 episodes will be released in a limited quantity.
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the upcoming release will also include Blu-ray and 4K editions of some timeless masterpieces from the visionary duo, Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. Among these are Space: 1999 and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, which I can’t wait to revisit on my home theater system!
For the first time ever in the UK, Thunderbirds will be broadcast in high-definition, maintaining its original aspect ratio of 4:3. The collection will also feature exclusive bonus content such as creator interviews and “Thunderbirds: The Anniversary Episodes,” which are three brand new adventures based on stories from Century 21 Records audio series, initially released in 2016.
Jamie Anderson, Gerry Anderson’s son and the Managing Director of Anderson Entertainment, expressed his enthusiasm: “Reaching the 60th anniversary of Thunderbirds is a significant achievement, and after years of waiting, we are thrilled beyond words to unveil this original format release to our loyal worldwide fans who hold these shows as dear to their hearts as we do.
With more and more people from different generations appreciating my father’s inventions, it gives us great joy to mark the remarkable impact of his work by launching these unique editions.
First broadcast between 1965 and 1966, Thunderbirds takes place in the middle of the 21st century and centers around International Rescue, a clandestine organization helmed by former astronaut Jeff Tracy and his five offspring.
International Rescue, with their fleet of modern emergency vehicles, including the renowned Thunderbird machines, swiftly address worldwide catastrophes, utilizing state-of-the-art technology to save lives. The show gained popularity for its innovative use of Supermarionation (electronic marionette puppetry), stunning visual effects, and gripping plotlines. It is cherished as a timeless cult classic.
The show was developed by the husband-and-wife team of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, who gained prominence for their work in science fiction television. Previously, Gerry had utilized Supermarionation techniques on other series such as Supercar (1961), Fireball XL5 (1962-63), and Stingray (1964-65).
After completing work on Thunderbirds, they transitioned to projects like Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons (1967-68), then ventured into live-action productions such as UFO (1970-71) and Space: 1999 (1975-77).
Starting later this year, exclusive Blu-ray and 4K versions of shows like Thunderbirds, Space: 1999, and Captain Scarlet will be sold at the Gerry Anderson Store as well as other physical media retailers. Additionally, there are hints of more limited editions to come in the future.
More information is still pending, but this much is certain: after six decades, the Thunderbirds will take off once more!
