In a recent conversation on the Sacred Symbols podcast (as transcribed by VGC), ex-PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida has shared his views about Microsoft making Xbox games accessible on PlayStation. Yoshida refers to this action as a triumph, implying that PlayStation gamers now have expanded game choices compared to before.
Yoshida stated that it’s advantageous for PlayStation owners since they couldn’t play those games previously.
Yoshida emphasized that PlayStation was determined to avoid being overshadowed by Xbox. For him, the prospect of Sony’s console becoming a less popular choice, or the “minority platform,” was a frightening possibility. This fear stemmed from the likelihood that top developers from internal PlayStation studios might depart to create games for the larger player base instead.
In one interview, Yoshida shared that as a managing first-party, it was his longstanding fear (nightmare) that if PlayStation were to become a minority platform, it would be extremely challenging to continue first-party development because top creators might choose to leave. He added that these creators aren’t only artists; they are also businesspeople who aim to reach the largest possible audience for their games.
He went on to say that it’s quite normal for a platform to be in the minority, but if a game can only be launched on such a small platform, it becomes unviable in the long run – a situation he referred to as ‘a terrible nightmare.’
Based on the number of Xbox consoles that have been sold (their install base), it’s not surprising to grasp their strategies, as they seem clear-cut.
Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, expressed his perspective on making Xbox exclusive titles available for PlayStation as a profitable decision. This move would generate additional income, which could then be reinvested into creating even more video games. While some were concerned about the 30% revenue loss due to platform fees when selling games, Spencer emphasized the 70% profit gained by expanding the reach of Xbox games to a broader audience.
Spencer stated, “I don’t want to dismiss the idea of establishing a business there or finding supporters of our franchises there. I’m not trying to relocate everyone to Xbox exclusively. Our fans are deeply connected to where our games exist. By expanding access, we can let more people enjoy them. The 70% revenue share from games on other platforms is beneficial for us in creating impressive portfolios like the one demonstrated at Dev Direct, and I anticipate this trend will persist throughout the year.
More recently, Xbox has become more open-minded about launching their exclusive games on additional platforms beyond just PC and their own consoles. For example, “Sea of Thieves” was made available on the PS5 last year, which turned out to be beneficial for Microsoft. The next significant AAA Xbox game making its way onto the PS5 is “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle”. This game debuted on Xbox Series X/S and PC back in December and received positive reviews from both critics and consumers.
