Last year, the court case between Mr. Bates and The Post Office aired on ITV. Few anticipated the far-reaching effects the series would ultimately have in real life.
The play in four acts, detailing a genuine account of one of the most significant instances of injustice within the British judicial system, sparked fresh public indignation and the announcement of new laws intended to clear the names of falsely accused postmasters.
Many TV writers, such as Jack Thorne, have tried to replicate or draw inspiration from the significant influence of the case between Mr. Bates and the Post Office in their own works.
In this week’s edition of TopMob magazine, Thorne expressed his hope that some of the influence from the case Mr. Bates vs The Post Office might be felt in the upcoming Netflix series, Toxic Town.
However, it was truly awe-inspiring to witness the distance it traveled, and that’s the aspiration, for there remains an undercurrent of feeling that it wasn’t fully noticed.

Next week, “Toxic Town” will be available on Netflix, a series that revolves around one of the UK’s largest environmental scandals from the late ’80s and early ’90s, focusing on the personal accounts of those involved in the Corby toxic waste case.
For the duration under consideration, it was discovered that the incidence of upper-limb abnormalities in babies born within Corby was significantly greater compared to those born in neighboring regions. Subsequently, a judge determined that this disparity was attributed to negligence in the cleanup process of a steelworks facility.
Thorne commented on the series, stating: “I don’t believe it centers around the mothers pursuing additional targets, and they definitely weren’t in it for financial gain. Instead, their concern lies with the state of our nation, fearing that their experiences and those of others are being overlooked. When the government discusses reducing regulations and bureaucracy, they express anxiety about safeguarding ourselves and our children.
In the series, Jodie Whittaker plays Susan McIntyre, a character inspired by a real-life individual. Thorne commented on this woman: “Susan was a born leader. I admired everything I read about her, and when I met her, my admiration grew – she’s a complex, delightful person, a pleasure to write.
He added: “The predicament arises when someone says, ‘I have a desired version of myself to share.’ However, they did not do so. Instead, they revealed all aspects, including things that were extremely emotional and hard for them to discuss.
As a writer, the task at hand can be immense, yet I appreciate productions that are willing to put in the effort and uncover the dramatic elements hidden within complexity.
In addition to Whittaker, the series also includes stars such as Brendan Coyle (known for Downton Abbey), Aimee Lou Wood (recognized from The White Lotus), Karla Crome (familiar face from Am I Being Unreasonable?), Rory Kinnear (noted for Bank of Dave 2: The Loan Ranger), Robert Carlyle (acclaimed in The Hack), Claudia Jessie (prominent in Bridgerton), Joe Dempsie (well-known from Showtrial) and Michael Socha (renowned from DI Ray).
