The live-action adaptation of Disney’s classic tale Snow White, set for release in 2025, has sparked conversation again following the unveiling of a new international trailer and poster. Critics have taken notice of adjustments to Rachel Zegler’s appearance, particularly changes in lighting that appear to make her skin tone noticeably lighter. Zegler, who is of mixed Colombian and White heritage, appears significantly fairer in the Snow White poster compared to her actual complexion. This has fueled rumors that Disney might be altering Zegler’s appearance in promotional materials before the film hits theaters on March 21, 2025.

The circumstance holds an element of unexpected humor. When Zegler was initially chosen to play Snow White, she garnered attention with a contentious remark stating that she wouldn’t lighten her skin tone for the part, despite the fact that there had been no general demand for such an alteration.
“Yes I am playing Snow White, no I am not bleaching my skin for the role,” she said.
Currently, it appears that Disney may be modifying Snow White’s appearance on the poster for a closer fit to the conventional portrayal of a fairytale princess in the movie. This adjustment has ignited discussions about whether the studio is aiming to address past critiques regarding Halle Bailey’s casting.

From the beginning, the decision to select Zegler for the role of Snow White sparked debate, and it’s turned out to be one of several hurdles the movie has encountered along the way. Since its announcement, the Snow White project has been embroiled in a string of controversies that have only grown more intense over time. Some fans were taken aback by Zegler’s remarks about the 1937 animated film, which she described as outdated. Similarly, her comments regarding the Prince, whom she characterized as “a man who essentially stalks her,” drew criticism for what some saw as a dismissal of the original story’s allure.
During the movie’s promotional events, Zegler stirred controversy with her outspoken views on diverse societal and world issues. Her statements generated criticism and intensified existing unfavorable feelings about the film.
Critics have raised concerns about how Disney has dealt with the characters from the Seven Dwarfs. Originally, Disney intended to hire actors who are naturally short, but after Peter Dinklage voiced his reservations regarding representation, Disney made a switch and picked a multicultural cast, among whom only one person had dwarfism. The initial images of this new cast stirred up strong disapproval, leading eventually to Disney deciding to replace the live-action versions with entirely computer-generated images of the dwarfs. These designs have faced widespread criticism for their mediocre quality.

The movie-making process has encountered some logistical hurdles as well. Numerous re-takings have inflated the production cost to an estimated $300 million. Regardless of this substantial expenditure, early predictions for its box office performance indicate a relatively low start, with industry insiders suggesting the film’s domestic premiere could be anywhere from $63-$70 million—quite a distance from the blockbuster debuts of Disney’s past live-action successes such as The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast, which eventually grossed over $1 billion.
The promotional strategies have not significantly affected the public’s favorable response towards the movie. Each trailer has faced a broad wave of criticism, garnering millions of disapprovals on YouTube. Even the special Christmas Day preview, showcasing Zegler singing the new song “Waiting on a Wish,” did not generate much interest, receiving more negative feedback than positive and sparking minimal enthusiasm among viewers.

The newly unveiled poster for the upcoming “Snow White” movie has sparked an extra round of discussion, as modifications to Zegler’s visual depiction have led to Disney receiving heightened criticism regarding their promotional decisions. With the film’s release date fast approaching, the fate of “Snow White” seems more unpredictable than ever, given the persisting debates and ominous box office predictions.
