Effective immediately, the creative direction of the iconic James Bond franchise is now in the hands of Amazon MGM Studios. Following Amazon’s purchase of MGM in 2022, they gained ownership of the entire James Bond film collection and distribution rights. However, it’s important to note that the creative control over James Bond has always been with producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. Recent speculation suggested a potential shift in power for the James Bond franchise, but today’s announcement makes it clear: Amazon MGM Studios now takes charge of the creative aspect of James Bond. The intellectual property rights for James Bond have become part of a fresh collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios, Wilson, and Broccoli, with Amazon assuming control over the creative direction.
Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, remarked that James Bond, who first appeared on stage more than 60 years back, is undoubtedly one of the most recognized figures in film and television entertainment.
We owe a debt of gratitude to Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, who first brought James Bond to cinemas worldwide, and to Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, whose steadfast commitment has carried on this beloved franchise. We feel privileged to preserve this cherished tradition and eagerly anticipate introducing the next chapter of the iconic 007 to audiences globally.
Wilson stated: “After an amazing 59-year journey as a James Bond producer, I am choosing to shift my focus towards artistic pursuits and philanthropic endeavors. Consequently, Barbara and I believe it’s appropriate for Amazon MGM Studios to guide James Bond into the upcoming era.
In simpler terms, Barbara Broccoli, producer, stated that her career has been devoted to preserving and expanding the remarkable legacy passed down by their father, Cubby Broccoli. She’s had the privilege of collaborating closely with four exceptional actors who portrayed James Bond and countless talented artists within the industry. With the end of No Time to Die and Michael’s retirement from the films, she feels it is now appropriate to concentrate on her other projects.
