Erik Menendez is sharing gratitude for Tammi Menendez.
Speaking as a devoted fan, here I am, 54-years-old and brother to Lyle, 57, who’s also awaiting our March resentencing date for the tragic murders we committed back in 1989 against our parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez. Throughout my nearly three decades behind bars, I’ve been fortunate enough to have a rock by my side – a woman who has stood by me through thick and thin: my wife, my partner for more than two decades.
Initially, my confinement wasn’t merely a sentence to serve time in prison; it was a sentence that separated me from my brother and any prospect of liberty. As I found myself in a harsh level four, a maximum-security unit, I was entirely on my own, scared. The prison life was challenging for me, filled with intimidation and trauma. It was an unforgiving environment where I had to survive amidst danger.
In 1993, Erik started communicating with the woman who later became his wife, Tammi, and got to know her daughter Talia. This was around the time when Erik’s imprisonment started showing signs of improvement.
Luckily, a woman’s love entered my world, giving me a small, cherished daughter. From there, I started experiencing fatherhood, growth, and healing much of the self-disdain and self-contempt I had carried throughout my existence,” he explained further.
Even though the Menendez brothers are striving for possible freedom from prison, Erik expressed that his life’s hope has already been rekindled within the confines of incarceration.
Erik explained, “I entered prison bearing the scars of my past, including the terrible crime I had committed and its aftermath, which I had to confront truthfully. It was incredibly tough for me; there were many false starts. However, as I started focusing on self-improvement and understanding that I’m not broken or defective, but rather normal, a glimmer of hope emerged, gradually illuminating my path. This process of learning to love myself once more was crucial and, in truth, it is what has given me optimism.
Lyle, who recently announced his divorce from Rebecca Sneed after 21 years of marriage, expressed that he doesn’t rely on the upcoming resentencing date for hope. Instead, he shared that his and Erik’s imprisonment have taught him valuable traits such as “serenity” and “forbearance.
Even so, Erik mentioned that should he and his brother be freed this year, their initial action would be to spend quality time with their loved ones.
Erik pointed out that he’s been with his wife for 25 years, and it’s time for him to be at home for her now,” he said. “Also, my daughter and the rest of my family deserve my presence.

28-year-old Lyle Menendez exchanged vows with model and salon receptionist Anna Eriksson on July 2, 1996. This was the same day that he and his brother Erik Menendez were sentenced to life imprisonment without the chance of parole for the 1989 murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez.
In 1993, Anna began penning letters to Lyle while he was undergoing his initial trial, which ultimately ended in a hung jury. The year after, she relocated to California to be close to him. During the lengthy retrial that commenced in 1995 and concluded in March 1996 with convictions, Anna proved to be a consistent figure. This account is corroborated by the Los Angeles Times.
Although they weren’t able to exchange their vows in person, Lyle decided to go ahead with the ceremony using a telephone, with the groom being held in custody and the bride present at defense attorney Leslie Abramson’s office.
He seemingly hoped to be able to wed Anna in person, once he knew where he’d end up.
In response to the order that separated Lyle and Erik in 1996, California Correctional Institution spokesman Lt. Jack Pitko informed the LA Times that there was indeed a marital process ongoing within their institution. He further stated that there’s a waiting list for such arrangements, but if the rules are followed diligently, he saw no reason why the individual shouldn’t be allowed to marry.
In 2001, Anna decided to initiate a divorce proceeding, as it was widely reported that she discovered Lyle was secretly writing to other women.
Lyle didn’t make a hasty decision when he married journalist Rebecca Sneed, who was reportedly around 33 years old, in November 2003. In fact, they had been acquainted for about ten years before their wedding, initially through correspondence and later during personal meetings, as confirmed by a prison representative to the Associated Press.
The event occurred at Mule Creek State Prison, situated not far from Sacramento – where Lyle lived until his reunion with Erik in 2018, which happened at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility located in southern San Diego County.
In a 2017 interview with People, Lyle mentioned that our conversations are typically uninterrupted by distractions, which is more common than what many married couples experience amid life’s busy events. At that point, Rebecca resided in Sacramento but reportedly visited every week.
Lyle noted that we usually chat over the phone daily, occasionally multiple times a day. He shared that his marriage is consistently engaging, providing him with stability, tranquility, and happiness. This close bond serves as a balance against the uncertain, highly stressful surroundings he’s in.
Rebecca “endured much,” he admitted. “Yet she possesses the bravery to face the challenges. It would be simpler for her to depart, but I am deeply appreciative that she chooses not to.
After the initial situation, it’s been revealed that Rebecca and Lyle have parted ways, even as discussions about potentially re-sentencing Lyle and Erik and granting them freedom are ongoing.
She shared on her Facebook page on November 22 that she and Lyle have been apart for some time yet remain close friends and family. I still manage his Facebook accounts with his input, and I am steadfast in my dedication to the ongoing struggle for Lyle and Erik’s release, as demonstrated throughout the years.
She expressed, “I’ll keep you informed about the advancements in the case as it moves forward since we share a mutual aim – securing their freedom. Rest assured, my efforts on their behalf won’t waver.
Given that gossip from tabloids doesn’t cease even at the prison boundaries, the post additionally clarified, “This is NOT a case of infidelity.
Erik’s spouse, Tammi Menendez (now aged 62), was previously married to Chuck Saccoman. It was during this time that she first saw the younger Menendez brother on television in 1993 and developed a unique affection for the then-22-year-old man who was under trial for murder.
Later on, as she shared with People magazine, she disclosed to her spouse that she intended to pen a letter to Erik. Chuck granted her permission for this endeavor.
In response to questioning, Erik shared that upon reading Tammi’s letter, he experienced an emotion unlike any other from the countless letters he had received. He decided to keep this particular one separate. The correspondence stirred something in him, and so he responded. Over time, they exchanged more letters, a process Erik found gratifying. This friendship developed gradually, making it unique for Erik because it wasn’t connected to the trial or media chaos. Tammi was an individual outside of the madness.
Initially, Tammi was skeptical about the brothers’ claim of abuse, as she herself noted in her 2005 book titled “They Said We’d Never Make It: My Life With Erik Menendez“. Additionally, Tammi disclosed to MSNBC that Erik had mentioned having a long-term girlfriend during their early interactions.
However, it was in 1996 when Tammi discovered, as she recounts in her book and discussions, that Chuck had been physically harming his teenager daughter from a past relationship. At the time, they were both raising a 9-month-old child together.
Chuck turned himself into police and died by suicide two days later, according to People.
In 2005, she shared with the publication that following Chuck’s passing, she contacted Erik. He provided comfort, and our correspondence gradually became more profound.
As I stood face-to-face with Erik for the first time at Folsom State Prison in August of 1997, a wave of anxiety washed over me, leaving no doubt about my genuine apprehension.
Or
When I finally met Erik in person at Folsom State Prison in August 1997, I couldn’t hide the fact that I was feeling quite on edge, my nerves were really getting the better of me.
Both sentences convey the same meaning and maintain a casual, conversational tone while emphasizing the personal experience of the speaker.
She clarified that Erik had never seen her in person since she’d only shared a tiny 1×1 picture with him. However, when he entered the room, his vibrant energy and enthusiasm were unmistakable as he bounded down the stairs, making it seem as if they were reuniting with an old acquaintance.
They married in 1999, a Twinkie serving as their wedding cake.
They’ve stayed together since then, but Tammi admits that not having regular visits can be challenging.
She explained on MSNBC in December 2005 that their routine included a greeting kiss upon arrival and departure, and she mentioned that holding hands was also an essential yet challenging aspect of it. Many people might not grasp the significance of this ritual.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d say, “I made an effort to avoid dwelling on the possibility that my future might never include freedom beyond these walls.
In an interview with People in 2005, he expressed that Tammi is his source of strength. He finds it difficult to contemplate the thought without feeling deep sadness and a raw fear. The mere mention of it sends a chill down his spine. It’s something so terrifying that he still hasn’t fully accepted it.
However, on a brighter side, Tammi additionally showed him the skills of being a good partner, Erik mentioned. “Instead of makeup sex, it’s about a 15-minute conversation, which means you truly need to put effort into resolving issues.
