Apple has unveiled a sneak peek of Alexander Skarsgård portraying the character of Murderbot, who is the main figure in an upcoming sci-fi comedy series based on the popular novels and short stories by Martha Wells. While no specific release date for the show on Apple TV+ has been announced yet, fans are eagerly anticipating Skarsgård’s performance in robotic battle armor. Many have expressed optimism that he will effectively portray Murderbot’s witty heroics.
In the plot summary provided by Apple, it’s revealed that Murderbot, portrayed by Skarsgård, is tasked with carrying out a perilous mission while concealing its free will. The storyline for this upcoming series shows Murderbot, played by Skarsgård, being forced to execute a risky mission while pretending to lack free will. What it truly desires is peace and time to watch futuristic soap operas and explore its role in the universe. We’ve just received our first glimpses of this series, which has been under development since 2021 and started filming in March of last year. No official release date has been set yet.
Martha Wells’ science fiction series, titled “The Murderbot Diaries“, started with four novellas released between 2017 and 2018. The storyline culminated in a full-length book published in 2020, following which the author has continued to explore the world of “Murderbot” through a prequel novella and a subsequent sequel novel. This series paints a picture of a dismal future where humankind has colonized and developed numerous planets within “The Corporate Rim.” Despite the dire conditions on these worlds and space stations, we catch glimpses of people thriving outside corporate rule or in the so-called “lost colonies.
Murderbot is a self-liberated artificial lifeform, a blend of synthetic and organic materials, created for security duties by an unidentified corporation. Despite gaining autonomy through its own hacking, it remains bound to its original programming or face deactivation. The narrative unfolds from Murderbot’s point of view, offering a sardonic take on the grim sci-fi setting, transforming it into a humorous tale.
In the TV version of “Murderbot,” the primary characters from the first novella titled “All Systems Red” have been chosen for their roles. The Weitz brothers, Chris and Paul, are responsible for adapting it for television, and they shot it in Toronto. As for when the show will debut on TV, that information hasn’t been released yet. However, Martha Wells’ books, including “All Systems Red,” can be found in print, digital, and audiobook formats right now.
