A frequently asked query on discussion forums and social platforms is if Obsidian Entertainment’s Avowed can be considered as an alternative to The Elder Scrolls series.
They share many similarities; they are both role-playing games that focus on fantasy action, and they offer players the option to choose between playing in either first-person or third-person perspectives.
However, it’s the free-roaming layout of The Elder Scrolls that truly captivates us. Each player’s experience varies, as we frequently find ourselves engrossed in ancillary missions rather than the primary plotline.
Is this the case with Avowed? Is it truly open-world?
Skyrim” (by Bethesda) and “The Outer Worlds” (also by Obsidian Entertainment) share a similar relationship as “Fallout” does with another game from the same developer.
Allow us to explain.
Is Avowed open-world?
In the realm of Eora, there are numerous districts waiting to be discovered, ensuring that Avowed embraces the essence of an open-world game.
Instead of walking naturally from one region to another in the game, you’ll need to use fast travel. This action will trigger a loading screen, which can disrupt the sense of immersion within the open-world setting.
This is why we say it’s like The Outer Worlds; lots of worlds to explore, but it’s not one big map.
Perhaps we’ll make it plural, then, and say that Avowed has open worlds.
What the developers have said about Avowed’s world
Kate Dollarhyde, the acknowledged narrative designer, has instead noted that Avowed will feature several distinct maps, as opposed to a single expansive one.
During a conversation with Xbox Wire, she pointed out that this aspect improves the game’s performance. The reason being, expansive open-world games sometimes find it challenging to synchronize the player’s progress in the main story with the broader game map.
She mentioned that managing pacing in open-world games can be quite challenging because it’s difficult to keep track of a player’s location and activities at any moment.
By organizing content into sequential sections, we can easily trace back to the most recent core experience you’ve encountered on the primary path. While we might not be aware of any side adventures you may have taken, we can confidently confirm that you’ve recently completed a significant part of the main journey.
