In a disappointing turn for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, Kraven the Hunter, which raked in $11 million during its debut weekend – the poorest opening yet for this franchise – has concluded its nine-week run at the global box office with a total of $60 million. This R-rated adaptation of Marvel’s Kraven the Hunter, featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Sergei Kravinoff, Ariana DeBose as Calypso, Fred Hechinger as Dmitri Kravinoff/Chameleon, Christopher Abbott as the Foreigner, Alessandro Nivola as Aleksei Systevich/the Rhino, and Russell Crowe as Nikolai Kravinoff, is now officially one of the lowest-grossing superhero movies ever made.
In December, the film “Kraven the Hunter” was launched, pulling in $25 million at the domestic box office and an additional $35 million overseas, totaling a worldwide revenue of $60 million. Initially, it ranked third behind the third consecutive week of “Moana 2” and “Wicked,” but subsequent releases like “Mufasa: The Lion King” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” left “Kraven” struggling. As a result, it experienced a significant drop of 72% and slipped to seventh place, earning only $3 million in its second weekend.
2024 saw the release of the third Sony Universe Movie, Kraven, which came after the disappointing reception of Madame Web and Venom: The Last Dance. Critically-panned Madame Web earned just $100 million globally, while Venom 3, starring Tom Hardy, made a series low $474 million. In comparison, the highest-grossing Sony Universe Movie is 2018’s Venom with a staggering $856 million, followed by Venom: Let There Be Carnage ($501 million), Venom: The Last Dance ($474 million), and Morbius ($162 million). Regrettably, Kraven underperformed, falling short of Madame Web’s earnings by a significant $40 million, with Sony reportedly spending $110 million on its production.
The earnings from Kraven’s movie have placed it as the superhero film with the lowest gross since the New Mutants in 2020, during the pandemic era ($47 million), and the lowest wide release of a superhero movie since Elektra in 2005 (Fox’s Daredevil spinoff, $56 million). To put it into perspective, Kraven’s earnings were significantly lower than other poorly-received superhero movies like Catwoman ($82 million) and Fant4stic from 2015 ($167 million), which was the worst-reviewed comic book movie for a decade before Joker 2 ($207 million).
Not only did Kraven fall short of success, but he surprisingly didn’t even manage to surpass the box office earnings of the 2008 parody film, “Superhero Movie” ($73 million), which is quite unusual.
In terms of audience and critical reception, the action film directed by J.C. Chandor fared exceptionally poorly among the six movies in the SSU series. It earned one of the lowest Rotten Tomatoes scores (16%), trailing behind only Madame Web (11%) and Morbius (15%). Furthermore, it received a mediocre “C” grade from audiences on CinemaScore, which is relatively low for the genre. This score places it slightly better than the 2015 Fox-produced Fantastic Four (C-) and the anticipated flop Joker: Folie á Deux (D) in 2024, which currently holds the record for the worst grade ever given to a studio comic book movie.
Kraven the Hunter is now available to watch at home.
